Systems with StorEdge A1000, A3x00 or A3500FC Arrays, whic
h are
configured to run under volume manager software, may experience
database or application problems when repeated disk I/O error retries
occur. Excessive RDAC and Solaris disk driver retry attempts on I/O
errors may result in database managers (such as Oracle) or applications
to timeout. This may cause the applications to crash or run very
slowly following an I/O timeout. |

This FIN highlights the precautions that should be followed if performing
Solaris Operating Environment upgrades on the system with Sun StorEdge
RAID Manager software installed, Absence of these precautions could result
in data loss or possibly the data corruption. When upgrading from Solaris
2.6 to any higher Solaris version, a copy of the file /kernel/drv/sd.conf
needs to be backed up and then restored after the upgrade. If this action
is not taken then an upgrade will result in repeated error messages upon
boot up and an inability to scan the array module

    The replacement procedure
for the SCSI controller board (ESM card) in a D1000 disk array is not well-documented.
If the proper procedure is not followed, complications can arise which might
lead to data loss. This FIN describes correct ESM replacement procedures
and gives examples of additional problems which might occur as a result
of an ESM card failure and its subsequent replacement. Replacement of the
D1000 ESM card may result in drives being "failed" in one or more drive
trays of an A3x00/A3500FC array. A failure of an ESM card will cause the
entire D1000 tray to go offline. As a result, all disks in the D1000 tray
will go offline until the ESM card is replaced. |

    It is possible for A3x00
controllers running RAID Manager 6.1.x
to deadlock causing interruption of data availability. The
deadlock condition is most likely to occur at times of controller state
changes including failover, failback, mode change from passive to
active or vice versa or upgrade from RM6.1.x to RM6.22. The deadlock is
most likely to occur on A3x00 modules running firmware 02.05.06.39 but
deadlock has also occurred using firmware 02.05.06.32. |

    Power sequencer cables in
StorEdge A3500/A3500FC 1x5 configurations may be connected incorrectly,
causing potential data access issues. The L5, R5, L6, and R6 power sequencer
cables on a certain number of A3500/A3500FC arrays were installed in the
wrong order at Sun Manufacturing. This causes the controllers to power-up
before the D1000 disk trays. The controllers search for disks and try to
configure LUN's while the disks are still spinning up. |

    StorEdge A1000, A3000, A3500,
A3500FC requires the existence of LUN 0 for proper operation. This FIN has
critical impact to all A3X00/A3500FC/A1000 configurations on all Sun Ultra
Enterprise platforms using all versions of Solaris/SunOS. Ultra Systems
experiencing faults documented in this FIN can be down for extended periods
or until LUN 0 is installed. |

is required to run Solaris 8 with Raid Manager 6.22. RAID Manager 6 is currently
not supported on Solaris 8, attempting to boot Solaris 8 with RM 6.22 installed
will produce an error message as shown below; "rdriver not loading, ie "drvconfig:
driver failed to attach: rdriver". This means that the data on A3x00/A1000
arrays will not be accessible under Solaris 8. This applies to all versions
      of RM 6.0, 6.1, 6.1.1, and 6.22 when running Solaris 8. (6-12-00) |

    After a RM6.1.1 upgrade the
customer will notice that the A3000 or RSM2000 LUNs created with Raid Manager
firmware 2.5.2 are smaller in capacity than LUNs created prior to the upgrade
even though the drive groups show the same size. This condition will be
seen when the LUNs created and use the maximum available capacity in the
      drive group. |

      Guide (805-7854-11) |
    The firmware download procedure
documented in the A3x00 Controller Replacement Guide pn 805-7854-11 is incomplete
and misses some critical instructions. If the FW downgrade procedure in
the document is strictly followed, the controller will fail to become ready.
Consequently Our Enterprise Services Logistics Organizations have seen a
large number of A3x00 controller returned defective. |

When a SCSI bus reset is issued
under heavy i/o, the isp driver causes the sd driver to report i/o errors.
Any configuration with an isp driver version prior to the fix to bug 4280783
may be affected. The most likely configuration to experience this problem
is multi-hosted and shared storage devices e.g. A3x00 (SCSI version only),
A1000, D1000 etc. connected to differential SCSI cards using the isp driver,
or MultiPack, UniPack etc. connected to single-ended SCSI cards using the
      isp driver. |

    Differential Ultra/Wide SCSI
      UDWIS/S (370-2443-01) |
    Intermittently, SCSI devices
connected to a UDWIS card may not be usable after a reboot. This can prevent
a system from booting if the UDWIS card connected to the boot device is
affected. This problem is due to some issues in FCode versions less than
1.28 in the UDWIS card. When it is booting, the card fails to send a SCSI
bus reset, or the SCSI bus reset is not held long enough to meet the SCSI
specification, or the card fails to initialize correctly. This leads to
the attached SCSI devices failing to negotiate correctly with the host. |

    E10000 systems with an A3X00
attached may encounter Dynamic Reconfiguration errors. System downtime may
be required to add entries in /etc/system that identify the rdriver as a
DR safe device. Dynamic Reconfiguration (DR) detach of a system board that
contains non-pageable memory may fail to quiesce the OS if it is configured

software, and Solaris 2.5.1 or 2.6 OS software. |

to invoke manual intervention if the cluster goes into failure fencing or

In order for RM 6 software
to configure multiple LUNs, it adds entries to the sd.conf and rdriver.conf
files. The add16lun.sh script is a case in point as it enlarges the sd.conf
for 16 LUNs for all targets. However, there is bug in the Solaris kernel
that sometimes causes a panic if a *.conf file is greater than 8k bytes.

When a RAID 0 LUN with a mounted
file system experiences a failure that shows a "dead" LUN status, the recovery
procedure needs to be augmented. If the Recovery Guru is unable to unmount
the file system, the recovery will not complete, even though there is a
message indicating the recovery can proceed even with mounted file systems.
Note that RAID 0 LUN's behave like non-RAID devices. The processes doing
I/O to the dead LUN need to be stopped and Recovery Guru re-run so the unmount
will complete and the recovery can proceed. |

    Patch 105463-05
      Sun Enterprise VM 2.5
      Sun Enterprise VM 2.6 |
    When patch 105463-05
(SEVM2.5 patch) is applied on an operational system, and the system is rebooted,
some storage devices may appear to be missing or longer listed. This symptom
may also be experienced when installing EVM2.6, upon execution of vxinstall,
not all of the storage devices on the system will be available for EVM to
use. This may happen on systems that have a mixture of storage devices,
although there have been reports of systems with a single SPARCstorage Array
attached, experiencing loss of access to some of the disks after application
of this patch. The device loss is due to a modification that had been made
to the DMP driver binary file in this release of the patch. Systems that
have disabled DMP operation will not experience this problem. |
