A quick UPS testing/calibration tutorial for old 'dumb' APC UPSes such as the "Smart-UPS 1250"

  1. Find wattage rating of UPS (Typically 60% of VA rating)
  2. Connect 1/2 wattage of restive load (incandescent lamps)
  3. Disconnect line power using a switched power strip to make sure ground stays connected!
  4. Let the UPS run on battery until it shuts off on its own due to low battery power
  5. Let the UPS recharge fully before going on battery again
  6. Your UPS is now properly calibrated for your current battery condition and you know that it works!
Please note
  • May not apply to all UPSes
  • This is the official procedure for calibrating 'dumb' APC UPS
  • Ground is used as 0 voltage reference
  • The point of the restive load is to make sure that the load on the system is constant for the entire test
