Solution Type FAB (standard) Sure Solution 1000376.1 : StorEdge 6130 FC Controller replacement procedures do not mention that you might have to reset the IP address, Gateway and or Netmask.
PreviouslyPublishedAs 200498 Product Sun StorageTek 6130 Array Bug Id <SUNBUG: 6349345> Part
Impact In order to properly administer a StorEdge 6130 array, the Management Host requires out of band network access to both controllers. At the time of installation, the customer can select to accomplish this task by using either Static or Dynamic IP address assignment. For those customers that use the Static method and use a non-default address (default=192.168.128.101/102), there is nothing in the FC Controller replacement procedure indicating that you must reset the IP address, Gateway or Netmask of the new controller. It is likely that, in most of these instances, the array has already been in production for some time and thus the impact of this may not be immediately obvious. Symptoms After replacing a controller, attempts to create or modify volumes may result in the following error messages if the IP address, Gateway or Netmask is not updated: "This operation must be performed by the alternate controller. This modification attempt failed." or "This operation must be performed by the alternate controller. This creation attempt failed." Examples of activities that may prompt these errors are:
Also attempts to upgrade firmware on the array may hang. Waiting up to 2 hours may display timeout errors like: "Connection timed out" or "One of the controllers is not reachable." Root Cause The need for having to manually update the IP address, Gateway and Netmask was not foreseen. Workaround After the replacement of a failed controller (A in the example below), the IP address, Gateway and Netmask of the controllers should be verified by any of the following commands: Using a current 6130SupportData output: # egrep 'Tray.0.Controller|IP address' storage* | head -8 Notice that the A controller (Tray.0.Controller.1) has a default IP address, Gateway and Netmask but the B controller doesn't. Using the GUI: Access the GUI using the IP address of the Management Host: https://<ip_address>:6789
Earlier versions of the Management Host Software have the Controllers under the Administration tab. Using the CLI after logging in as a valid user: # sscs list -a <array_name> controller | egrep 'IP|Controller|Gateway|Mask' Controller: B Again, the A controller has a default IP address, Gateway and Netmask but the B controller doesn't. ---------------------------- Comprehensive Field Instructions: Before replacing any controller, the Service Engineer should, using the methods described above, record what the current IP address, Gateway and Netmask of that controller is. After a controller is replaced, the IP address, Gateway and Netmask of the replacement controller should then be verified to have been appropriately updated. In the cases of customers using either DHCP/BOOTP or default settings, the update should be automatic. If the IP address, Gateway or Netmask do require a manual update, either of the following methods can be used. A) GUI: Access the GUI using the IP address of the Management Host: https://<ip_address>:6789
Earlier versions of the Management Host Software have the Controllers under the Administration tab. B) CLI after logging in as a valid "storage" user role: # sscs modify -a <array_name> -g <gateway_ip_address> -i <ip_address> \ -m <netMask> controller [A|B] Resolution A bug report (6349345) has been filed and should be addressed in a future release of the product.
