Sun Fire[tm] V880 Server: Repair Procedures

• Table showing cable routing information is on page 222. The cabling instructions for the Loop B PCI FC-AL data cable are incorrect in the Sun Fire V880 Service Manual, due to a late change to the labeling scheme on the cable's connectors. The correct cabling information is provided below:

• The 3.3V DC-DC Converter on Sun Fire V880 CPU/Mem Boards may cause the system to shutdown and start reboot process around the failed CPU/Mem Board (FCO A0188-1).

• 816-4517 - This document describes the procedure for replacing the DC-to-DC converter on a 750 MHz CPU/Memory board (part number 501-5818-05) for the Sun Fire V880 server. You must replace the DC-to-DC converter on every -05 CPU/Memory board that has not had work order WO_23160 performed on it. This must be done for every -05 CPU/Memory board in a system. A -05 CPU/Memory board that already has the replacement DC-to-DC converter on it is identified by the work order label WO_23160 affixed to the front label of the board, as shown in the following illustration.
  Note: You do not have to replace the DC-to-DC converter on the -07 750 MHz CPU/Memory board, part number 501-5818-07.

• NOTE: When updating the disk backplane firmware using patch 111474, the superuser prompt will return after issuing the luxadm command in step 2 of the patch instructions. You must wait at least 15 minutes after the superuser prompt returns before continuing or performing any other operations. This minimum wait time is required for the flash update process to propagate the firmware code to all SSC100 processors in the system.

• The procedure How to Install the Expansion FC-AL Backplane as documented in the Sun Fire V880 Server Service Manual is incomplete. Please check the current revision of the Sun Fire V880 Server Product Notes for the corrected procedure.

9c. If a Sun StorEdge PCI Dual Fibre Channel Host Adapter card is installed to control Loop B of the FC-AL disk backplane, connect the card s FC-AL data cable to the base backplane at connectors C(J01100) and D(J01101).

• Power management issue causes loss of access to internal fiber channel disks on the Sun Blade 1000/2000, Sun Fire V880, V480, and 280R (FIN I0888-1).
• Seagate ST336605FC 36GB and ST373405FC 73G drives could be susceptible to label corruption (FIN I0816-1).
• Removing and Replacing the Sun Fire 280R (Littleneck), 480R (Cherrystone), or 880R (Daktari) hot-pluggable internal disk drives (SRDB 40517).
• Correcting device paths when replacing fiber boot disks after a ufsrestore (InfoDoc 40133).
• Replace a Sun StorEdge[TM] Volume Manager controled internal drive in a Sun Fire[TM] V880 (InfoDoc 44775)
• All FC-AL disk drives installed in a Sun Fire V880 system must meet the minimum firmware revision levels for Sun Fire V880 systems. Incorrect firmware can cause a variety of system problems that are often difficult to diagnose. To determine a disk drive's firmware revision level, use the inquiry feature of the Solaris format(1M) utility. The following table shows the minimum firmware revision levels for Sun Fire V880 disk drives as of 8/31/01. • The procedure How to Install a Disk Drive as documented in the Sun Fire V880 Server Service Manual and the Sun Fire V880 Server Owner s Guide is incomplete. The following task should be included in the procedure after Step 10:

  11. If you are installing more than one disk drive as part of a hot-plug procedure, wait for the green light on the drive you just installed to light steadily (not flashing) before installing another drive.

• Too many Memory DIMMs are being unnecessarily replaced on UltraSPARC III family of systems utilizing NG-DIMM memory (FIN I0760-1).
• DIMM error messages on Sun Fire V880 systems with Solaris 8 Updates 5 and 6 make it difficult to identify the failing DIMM. (FIN I0839-1).

• The procedure How to Remove a Motherboard Fan Tray in the Sun Fire V880 Server Service Manual is incorrect. On systems configured with the redundant cooling option, removing motherboard fan tray 5 (the primary motherboard fan tray) requires that you disconnect the cable for motherboard fan tray 6. Please see the Sun Fire V880 Server Product Notes for the corrected removal and installation procedure.
