Purpose
The purpose of this document is to assist in resolving iSCSI related problems with the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance. This document assumes that the network at IP level is working correctly and will not cover the following areas:
Out of Scope
Generic Network Problems
iSCSI boot issues
If the problem is suspected to be a networking issue refer to the following document.
<Document 1392086.1> Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to Troubleshoot Network Problems.
If the problem is hosts booting from an iSCSI LUN on the ZFS Storage Appliance, please refer to the client's operating system's documentation first to determine if the problem is on the initiator side.
Solaris 10 iSCSI boot support
<Document TBD Oracle Solaris - Solaris 10 Known iSCSI Boot Issues>
The RPE team has not yet published official documentation for Solaris 10u10 support of iSCSI boot.
Also, the below document should be prepared and linked to this document in future.
<Document TBD Oracle Solaris - Solaris 11 Known iSCSI Boot Issues>
If the problem still exists and it is suspected to be caused by misconfiguration on ZFS Storage Appliance, then this document will check potential problems on the appliance side.
Troubleshooting Steps
iSCSI Configuration Examples:
The following documents guides you through step by step on how to set up iSCSI on given platforms. They are a good starting point for considerations when carrying out an initial configuration.
Also, please refer to following product documentation as well as online help.
Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance Product Documentation
Troubleshooting Steps to Follow:
Please validate that each troubleshooting step below is true for your environment.
The steps will provide instructions or a link to a document, for validating the step and taking corrective action as necessary. The steps are ordered in the most appropriate sequence to isolate the issue and identify the proper resolution. Please do not skip a step.
Step 1. Issue Clarification
First define what the problem is.
Which LUN is having problems and what type of problem are being experienced.
Refer to the following documentation for identifying the problems.
<Document 1398582.1> Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: iSCSI Troubleshooting - Identifying the Problem.
Step 2. Data Collection
In order to analyze further, it is useful to see the configuration information and system logs. The following documents guides you through what data can be collected for each component of iSCSI infrastructure.
<Document 1400791.1> Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: iSCSI Troubleshooting - Collecting Data.
Step 3. Cause Determination
Loss of connectivity to iSCSI shared LUNs may be due to:
- ZFSSA (target) side problem
- Host (initiator) side problem
- Network connectivity issues such as iSNS, DNS and/or RADIUS
For further information please refer to
<Document 1401425.1> Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: iSCSI Troubleshooting - Cause Determination.
Step 4. Correct Problems
Correct any configuration problems by referring to the product documents:
Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance Product Documentation
The Configuration: iSCSI sections of the appropriate System Administration Guide contains information on
- How to configure the initiator IQN on ZFSSA
- How to configure the target IQN on ZFSSA
- How to add the initiator IQN to an initiator group.
- How to add ZFS target IQN to a target group.
- How to assign an initiator group and a target group to an iSCSI LUN
- How to configure iSNS configuration
At this point, verify if your new configuration resolves the problem.
If the problem persists, contact to Oracle Support Services for additional support.
Refer to <Document 1019887.1> Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to collect a support bundle using the BUI or CLI.
for collecting data in the first instance which will assist the timely resolution of the issue.
