Purpose

The purpose of this document is to assist a user in resolving problems with network connectivity to either the management interface via the BUI or CLI, or problems with client access to the shares of the 7000 Unified Storage system.
The document will cover general networking problems. Where there is a need for more specifics such as when a problem is unique to a certain client protocol, or directory service then links will be given to the relevant troubleshooting document.

To discuss this information further with Oracle experts and industry peers, we encourage you to review, join or start a discussion in the My Oracle Support Community - 7000 Series ZFS Appliances

Troubleshooting Steps

Please validate each troubleshooting step below for your environment.
The steps will provide instructions or a link to a document, for validating the step and taking corrective action as necessary.

1. Identify the Problem:

Determine exactly which functionality is affected:

  a) Problems accessing the Management Interface

  • Are both the BUI and CLI affected?
  • Is the CLI available via the console from the Service Processor ?
  • Is client access to the shares affected as well ?

  b) Clients have problems accessing the shares

  • Are all clients affected or just a subset?
  • Are all protocols affected (NFS, iSCSI, FC, etc.) ?
  • Is the problem specific to clients using one particular Directory Service (Active Directory, LDAP, NIS) ?

2. Clarify the Problem:

  • Has this ever worked or is this a configuration of new network functionality ?
  • What changes have been recently made, both in the network configuration on the Unified Storage system and in the surrounding network infrastructure and layout ?
  • Is this a cluster or a standalone head ?
  • Gather useful relevant configuration and diagnostic data - please refer to <Document 1394484.1> "Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: Gathering diagnostic data for network problems".

3. Possible causes:

Using the information gained in steps 1 and 2 some possible causes can be identified.

  a) If the problem is with the initial configuration of the network resources, or creating and adding new network resources such as configuring new datalinks, interfaces and routes, or configuring LACP or IPMP then please refer to:

<Document 1395461.1> Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: Best Practice Recommendations for Network Configuration.

  b) If the problem is with accessing the Management Interface (BUI and/or CLI) ONLY then please refer to:

<Document 1392845.1> "Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to Troubleshoot Loss of Network Access to the Management Interface".

  c) If the problem affects BOTH the Management Interface and client access to the data shares then it is likely that the underlying problem is not network related. However check first:

  • Are the Management Interface and access to the data shares using the same network interface (no dedicated admin interface)?
  • Does access to the Management Interface and Data shares rely on a common component? e.g. If there is no fixed route for clients accessing the shares then both Management Interface access and client data access could be dependent on the existence of a default route which may have failed.
  • Check <Document 1396100.1> "Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: Causes and Solutions for Well Known General Networking Problems" for possible causes of general network problems.
If after checking the above the problem does not appear to be related to the network configuration or infrastructure then refer to the following documents which could explain reasons for resource depletion on the Unified Storage System that would make it appear that network connectivity has been lost:
  • <Document 1388529.1> "Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to Troubleshoot ZFS Storage Pool Faults".
  • <Document 1331769.1> "Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: Performance Troubleshooting Resolution Path".

  d) If the problem is specific only to clients accessing shared LUNs by a particular block level storage protocol, e.g. FC or iSCSI, then please see the following documents:

  • <Document 1398581.1> "Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to Troubleshoot iSCSI Problems"
  • <Document 1434184.1>  "Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to Troubleshoot Fibre Channel Problems"
  • <Document 1435063.1>  "Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to Troubleshoot Infiniband Issues"

  e) If the problem is specific to clients accessing filesystem shares via SMB only then this can often be a problem with the directory service used to authenticate the user. Please refer to :

  • <Document 1402353.1> "Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to Troubleshoot Active Directory Issues".
  • <Document 1428753.1> "Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to Troubleshoot Identity Mapping and cross-platform file sharing issues"

If the problem is specific to SMB clients and the directory service has been ruled out as a cause please refer to

<Document 1408716.1> "Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to Troubleshoot SMB Problems".

  f) If the problem is specific to clients accessing filesystem shares via NFS only please refer to

<Document 1402579.1> "Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to Troubleshoot NFS Problems".

  g) If the problem affects clients accessing filesystem shares via FTP then refer to

<Document 1410965.1> "Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: Troubleshooting FTP access to shares".

  h) If the problem affects all clients irrespective of protocol or there is only one protocol that all clients use to access the shares please see

<Document 1396100.1> "Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: Causes and Solutions for Well Known General Networking Problems".

4. Further Assistance:

At this point if the problem still exists and further troubleshooting is required please contact Oracle Support Services to raise a new Service Request (SR) via the My Oracle Support portal or by telephoning your Oracle Global Support telephone number.
Please provide all data collated in steps 1 and 2. See

<Document 1020199.1> "How to Upload Data to Oracle Such as Explorer and Core Files"

for instructions on how to upload this data to Oracle, also refer to

<Document 1019887.1> "Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to collect supportfile bundle using the BUI or CLI"

for instructions on uploading a Support Bundle.
