Purpose

This document provides information about NDMP backup and/or restore performance on the ZFS Storage Appliance. It will also suggest Analytics data to capture in order to troubleshoot NDMP performance issues on the ZFS Storage Appliance.

To discuss this information further with Oracle experts and industry peers, we encourage you to review, join or start a discussion in the My Oracle Support Community - 7000 Series ZFS Appliances

Troubleshooting Steps

Many factors influence NDMP backup performance.  These can include the Data Management Application (DMA) backup server, ZFS Unified Storage System, TCP/IP network, hardware configuration, number of tape devices configured and also the backup architecture.

Before troubleshooting ZFS storage appliance NDMP performance, review
<Document 1331769.1> Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to troubleshoot performance issues
for information about general performance issue on the ZFS storage appliance.
Resolve any known performance issue before continuing further.
Also seek assistance from the DMA vendor for any known issues or sub-optimal configuration for the backup server.

Provide information on NDMP performance:

Detail activities along with date/time stamp when observing NDMP slow performance.

  • Activities can include backup (full or incremental) or restore (full or files/directories) or tape cloning
  • Define expected performance and what the performance is compared to
  • State the Data Management Application backup software and tape system configuration.
  • Which backup type is used - dump, tar or ZFS-NDMP (introduced in 2010.Q3 firmware update)
  • Describe the tape hardware - FC or direct SCSI connection, library types, version and number of connected tape drives.
  • Describe the backup - Single or multiple stream, project or share level, full or incremental backup/restore
  • Are data types with large number of small files and directories involved?
  • Describe the volume types involved- are they block based luns (iSCSI or Fibre Channel) and/or NFS/CIFS filesystems. Include the affected volumes or shares names if the performance impact is localized.
  • Has there been any DMA vendor analysis of the problem? Include commands and errors/warnings information logged on the DMA.
  • For a new installations, consult vendor supportable matrix for correct hardware, software version and connectivity.
  • Gather NDMP Analytics data

ZFS-NDMP backup type is a ZFS backup/restore solution based on ZFS send/receive stream. It is capable of backing up block targets such as iSCSI/FC luns as well as filesystems. It is also faster compared to dump or tar especially in data types with large number of small files/directories.

There are some current limitation on ZFS-NDMP implementation  - it can only backup/restore entire datasets, not single files or lists of files. ZFS-NDMP client configuration and expected performance is available in

<Document 1344903.1> Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: Performance considerations for NDMP backups

Analytic data collection:

At minimum the following datasets are required:

  • CPU: percent utilization
  • Disk: I/O operations per second broken down by disk
  • Disk: I/O bytes per second broken down by disk
  • Network: interface bytes per second broken down by interface
  • NDMP bytes data transferred from to/from disk
  • NDMP bytes data transferred to/from tape

One day's worth of collected NDMP analytics data is included in supportbundle.
