Troubleshooting Steps

Steps to Follow:

Please validate that each troubleshooting step below is true for your environment.
The steps will provide instructions or a link to a document, for validating the step and taking corrective action as necessary. The steps are ordered in the most appropriate sequence to isolate the issue and identify the proper resolution.
Please do not skip a step.

Preliminary work to identify NDMP type issues, gathering the necessary information and data for further analysis by Oracle Support via a Service Request.

1. Identifying NDMP type issues

Describe NDMP type issues as seen on ZFS storage appliance and on Data Management Application backup software.

2. Data collection

A list of general information and data that needs to be collected.
<Document 1387993.1> for identifying NDMP issues and data collection for NDMP related issues on ZFS Storage Appliance

3. NDMP and tape system configuration issues

<Document 1387918.1> for supported hardware and NDMP configuration on ZFS storage appliance.

4. Troubleshooting other NDMP issues related to ZFS Storage Appliance

Issue can be attributed to ZFS-SA firmware in Solaris Management Facility (SMF) or NDMP code on the appliance or other components in Solaris.
<Document 1395374.1> for troubleshooting NDMP issues related to ZFS Storage Appliance.

Troubleshooting DMA backup software is not covered in this document.
Consult respective DMA backup software manuals

5. NDMP backup/restore performance

There are many factors influencing backup/restore performance including hardware failure, under configured hardware, bottleneck within the appliance or other components outside ZFS storage appliance. Address these issues before going into NDMP backup/restore performance specific.
<Document 1388017.1> for further information and data collection specific to NDMP performance.

Background information:

NDMP is an open standard network-based backup protocol for Network Attached Storage.
The ZFS Storage Appliance is acting as a NDMP server that can directly be connected to a tape system (tape library/media changer and tape drives) or remotely attached to a tape system on another appliance.
The Data Management Application (DMA) is the backup software to control and manage backup/restore operations.
