Purpose
Checking and resolving ZFS Storage Appliance NDMP and tape system configuration issues.
Troubleshooting Steps
NDMP configuration issues on ZFS storage Appliance can happen during installation of the tape system, during configuration changes of the tape system, or during tape system failures. Check the following:
- Ensure Host Bus Adapter (HBA) is installed in the correct PCIe slot.
- Identify if ZFS storage appliance can see the attached tape library/drives.
- Ensure the Data management Application (DMA), tape library and tape drives are supported.
- Ensure DMA backup software has the correct configuration.
Check HBA
To check HBA status, model and slot number.
BUI - Maintenance > Hardware
Click "Show Details" next to the head unit, then click "Slot"
Click "information" icon to show detailed HBA information.
The status icon is green when HBA is ok, grey when not present or amber when faulted.
For further details check the Online Help wiki:
https://<appliance-ip-address>:215/wiki/index.php/Maintenance:Hardware
7x20 systems only support 8GB FC HBA for connection to tape units.
Part Number 371-4325-01 8Gb DP FC HBA
7x10 older systems support the following HBAs for connection to tape units:
Part Number 371-4325-01 QLogic 8Gb FC HBA
Part Number 375-3356-02 QLogic QLE2462L 4Gb FC HBA
Part Number 375-3357-05 LSI LSI22320SLE SCSI HBA
HBA details and slot location is available in ZFS Storage Appliance Online wiki help
https://<appliance-ip-address>:215/wiki/index.php/Installation:Overview
Ensure ZFS Storage Appliance can see the attached tape library/drives.
Display the attached tape library and drives using:
BUI - Status > NDMP
o For Fibre Channel connected devices:
- Check and resolve FC connectivity
- FC switch zoning and port status if connected to FC SAN
- Tape library and drives hardware and connectivity health check
o For Direct-attached SCSI connections:
- Check and resolve cabling from SCSI HBA to tape library and drives
- Ensure proper connection, terminator and 10 m cable length restriction.
- Consult HBA and tape library/drive manuals
A matrix of certified vendors, versions of supported backup software and connectivity types is available at the Application Integration Engineering website.
DMA backup software configuration for Oracle Secure Backup, Symantec Netbackup and EMC Networker is available in the NDMP Implementation Guide
Consult DMA backup software manuals for detail configuration and engage DMA vendor as required.
