Purpose

How to diagnose write errors on tape drives from a first touch perspective.

Troubleshooting Steps

Use the following steps to assist in diagnosing write issues on tape drives:

Step 1. Suspect tape exhibited similar problems on another drive.
IF NO, GO TO STEP 3

Step 2. Remove cartridge from library, set aside to make arrangements for media vendor to check out tape for possible media replacement.   Refer to Knowledge entries for replacement of 9x40 and T10000 media.  For all other media types, customer must contact media vendor directly to make arrangement for media replacement.  Update Problem log accordingly.

GO TO EXIT

Step 3. Run a cleaning cartridge through drive that was unable to write cartridge.

Step 4.
Load suspect cartridge back into original drive.

Step 5. Suspect tape can be written on original drive.
IF NO, GO TO STEP 7

Step 6.
Log volser and drive that had the fault, state problem was resolved by cleaning the drive, monitor for any re-occurrence.

GO TO EXIT

Step 7. Load suspect cartridge into another drive.

Step 8.
Cartridge can be written on alternate drive.
IF NO, GO TO STEP 2

Step 9. Further support is needed to resolve issue.  Customer must open a Service Request in MOS for a CSE to test drive for functionality.
IF NO, GO TO STEP 6

Step 10. Log volser and drive that had the fault and open Service Request using MOS for further assistance from Oracle Technical Support. 

EXIT
