PROBLEM OVERVIEW: memory  DIMM failure

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.
The customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/CUSTOMER ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE:

Removing the DIMMs

Caution – DIMM memory is installed in pairs. However, if you replace a single DIMM, the installed part must be identical to the one removed.

Caution – Handle the DIMMs along the outside edges. Do not handle the DIMM along the gold contact edge. Do not touch DIMM components or other metal parts.
Always wear a antistatic wrist strap when handling DIMMs.

1.Power off the workstation and open the chassis.

2.Locate the DIMM slots. The DIMM slots are organized in a set of four slots. The slots are located on the motherboard above the CPU and underneath the DIMM cooling duct.

Note – Your system’s DIMM cooling duct might not have two tines at the front end. The absence of these tines does not affect the functionality of the duct.

3. Remove the rear fan.

4. If you lifted the DIMM cooling duct prior to removing the CPU fan and heatsink assembly

5. Release the desired DIMM. Simultaneously press down on both ejector levers at the ends of the DIMM to unlock the DIMM from the DIMM slot

6. Lift the DIMM straight out of the DIMM slot.

Caution – Handle the DIMMs along the outside edges. Do not handle the DIMM along the gold edge. Do not touch DIMM components or other metal parts. Always wear a antistatic wrist strap when handling DIMMs.

Caution – Do not lift the DIMM out at an angle as it might damage the DIMM slot.

7. Set the DIMM aside on an antistatic mat.

Installing the DIMMs

Caution – If you are installing additional memory, remember that DIMMs must be installed in matched pairs of DIMMs. The workstation requires a minimum of one pair of matching DIMMs.

Caution – Use proper ESD grounding techniques when handling components. Wear an antistatic wrist strap and use an antistatic mat. Store ESD-sensitive components in antistatic bags before placing them on any surface.
Caution – Do not remove any DIMM from its antistatic container until you are ready to install it.

1.Locate the DIMM slots.

Note – DIMMs are installed in consecutive pairs: DIMM0 and DIMM1 or DIMM2 and DIMM3. Do not distribute a single pair of DIMMs across the two sets of slots.
Check placement of the DIMMs.

2. If you have not already done so, lift the DIMM cooling duct out of the way.

3. Remove the new DIMM from its antistatic container.

Caution – Handle DIMMs only by the edges. Do not touch DIMM components or metal parts. Always wear an antistatic wrist strap when handling DIMMs.

5.Review the recommended DIMM installation and configurations before installing the DIMM.

Caution – If you replace a single DIMM, the replaced DIMM must be identical to the one removed.

6.Align the DIMM with the slot.

7. Insert the DIMM into the slot. Using both thumbs, press the DIMM straight down into the DIMM slot until both ejector levers click, locking the DIMM in the DIMM slot

Note – The DIMMs must be inserted evenly, straight down along the DIMM slot until locked into place. The DIMM is seated when you hear a click and the DIMM ejector levers are in the vertical position.

8.Repeat Step 6 and Step 7 until all DIMMs are installed.

9. Flip the DIMM cooling duct over toward the front of the chassis, so that the guide rails of the duct are flush with the guide rails of the rear fan bracket.

10.Verify that the DIMM ejector levers are upright, seated, and tight.

11.Reposition the chassis.

12. Install the access panel, power on the system, and verify the component installation

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN the SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Restart software applications per applicable administration guides to resume system operation.
