FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: CPU/Fan heatsink failure

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.
The customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/CUSTOMER ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE:

Removing the CPU Fan and Heat Sink Assembly

1. Power off the system and open the chassis.

2. Locate the CPU fan and heatsink assembly.

3. (Optional) Remove the DIMM cooling duct and rear fan.

4. Position the chassis.

5. If you have not already removed it, lift the DIMM cooling duct out of the way.

6. Disconnect the CPU fan and heatsink assembly cable.

7. Release the CPU fan and heatsink assembly clips:

a. Press down on the latch of the clip, unhooking that end of the clip from the locking ring end tab.

b. Slide the clip to unhook the end opposite the latch.
This relieves clip pressure. The CPU fan and heatsink assembly might lift up on one side. Hold the assembly down until the other clip is removed.

c. Rotate the clip away from the CPU fan and heatsink assembly and lift it off the locking ring.

Note – Use care not to damage electronic components and other sensitive devices around the CPU fan and heatsink assembly.

8. Remove the CPU fan and heatsink assembly from of the CPU.

Caution – Do not power on the system without the CPU fan and heatsink assembly installed.

Installing the CPU Fan and Heatsink Assembly

Caution – The CPU will be damaged if the CPU fan and heatsink assembly is not installed upon powering on the workstation. In this situation, immediately power off the workstation.

1.Identify the CPU fan and heatsink assembly location on the motherboard.
The CPU fan and heatsink assembly centers within the locking ring which surrounds the CPU.

2. (Optional) Lift the DIMM cooling duct out of the way.

3. Remove the CPU fan and heatsink assembly and clips from the packaging.

4. Clean the top surface of the CPU with an appropriate solvent or cleaner so that it is smooth.

5. Remove any covers or shields protecting the thermal pad of the replacement CPU fan and heatsink assembly.

6. Place the CPU fan and heatsink assembly over the CPU. Arrange the assembly so that the cable is toward the back of the chassis

8. Attach the CPU fan and heatsink assembly clips onto the locking ring.

9. Connect the CPU fan and heatsink assembly cable.

10. If you lifted the DIMM cooling duct out of the way prior to installing the CPU fan and heatsink assembly, return the duct to its original position.

11. Reposition the chassis.

12. If you removed the rear fan and DIMM cooling duct prior to installing the CPU fan and heatsink assembly, install them.

13. Inspect the CPU fan and heatsink assembly and other component, cabling

14. Install the access panel, power on the system, and verify all components.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN the SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Restart software applications per applicable administration guides to resume system operation.
