DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?:

Sun Fire V250 product training is desirable but not required, as the part is a CRU

   TIME ESTIMATE: 30 mins

   TASK COMPLEXITY: 0

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:
PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Fauly Power Supply Unit (PSU)

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:

The Sun Fire V250  server has dual redundant power supplies. You can hot-swap one power supply while the other is still running, without having to power off the server.

For a redundant power supply configuration, the customer should take normal precautions to backup data and notify users of the maintenance, but the system does not need to be shut down.

For a single power supply configuration, the customer should take normal precautions to backup data, notify users of the maintenance and that the system will be powered down. The customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE?:

Follow standard ESD procedures to avoid Electrostatic Discharge.

Removing a Power Supply

1. Identify power supply to be removed

2. Disconnect the power cable from the PSU.

 - You cannot remove a PSU unless the power cable has been disconnected.

3. Pull the PSU handle into its down position.

 - Inside the server, this action breaks the connection between the PSU and the power distribution board.

4. Slide the PSU out of the server body by pulling on the green PSU handle.

5. Place the module on an antistatic bag or mat.

Installing  a Power Supply

1. Locate the replacement PSU in the correct bay.

2. With the handle in its down position, slide the PSU into the server’s chassis as far as it will go.

 - Ensure that the handle does not return to a vertical position until the PSU is as far into the chassis as it will go, otherwise the PSU will not engage with the power distribution board inside the server.

3. Press the handle until it clicks home.

 - This action engages the PSU with the power distribution board.

4. Connect the power cable to the PSU.

Indicator status                        Meaning
Flashing yellow                         PSU not fully inserted; repeat installation procedure.
Green                                      PSU inserted correctly.
All indicators out                       Either input voltage is insufficient to operate the PSU, or a system component is defective.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE?:

If the replacement was a hot swap/plug on a redundant configuration, the system should be operational and need no further work.
If the replacement was in a system with a single power supply, restart software applications per applicable administration guides to resume system operation
