StorageTek SL150 Modular Tape Library - Version All Versions and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

Is Auto Clean Supported on SL150 Library.

Fix

The SL150 does NOT support Auto Clean.

LTO drives are designed to remove normal levels of contamination automatically.  Small internal brushes sweep the debris away before it can build up and become a problem. Some LTO drives never require supplementary cleaning with cleaning cartridges.

The above statement assumes that the LTO drive in question streams from end to end.  In real world usage, this doesn't typically occur.

Cleaning will have to be managed by application software as needed.  The cleaning cartridge would be required in a data cell rather then a reserved cell.  Should partitioning be used, a cleaning cartridge will be needed for each partition.
