Goal

This documents describes how to configure the Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System shares in such way that replication speed is optimal

Fix

Replication on Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System is developed in such way that it runs on a per project basis and within a project it runs sequentially through all shares that need to be replicated from source to target.

This is the default and it will create one replication stream per project. The speed of a replication stream is limited to some 150 - 200 MB/sec at maximum.

An alternative way of replicating is share level replication. This achieved by selecting the share and deselecting the "Inherit from project" checkbox for the particular share.

Now a separate replication action can be defined for this share and when configured and enabled it will create a separate replication stream for this share.

So in order to configure replication for speed there are two ways:

  1. Configure as many projects as possible.  Each project will create a replication stream.
  2. Configure a replication action for each share. This will create a replication stream per share.

It is important to remember that shares that need to be replicated as one set together should not be replicated on share level. These should be replicated on the project level.

See also the online help of your appliance on https://<ip-of-your-appliance>:215/wiki/index.php/Shares:Projects:Replication and look for "Project-level vs Share-level Replication".

Note: If SSL is not required for the replication stream, disabling it will also increase performance
