How to Remove and Replace an x4140 HBA Battery Module

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Faulty SAS HBA Battery Module
- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE
RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:
Customer should perform an orderly and graceful shutdown of applications and OS
A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution

- WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

Follow standard ESD procedures

1. Power off the server and unplug (REMOVE) the power cords from power supplies

2. Remove the top cover

3. Locate the SAS HBA PCIe card with the Battery Module to be removed and its corresponding rise

4. Label and make note of the of where PCIe cards and cabling is installed

5. Unplug data cables from the PCIe card to be removed

6. Remove the riser board

7. Carefully remove the PCIe card from the riser board connector

8. Take the Battery out of the packaging and set it on the packing foam.

9. Slightly lift the HBA, and from underneath it, insert three plastic screws from
the BBU kit through the following three mounting holes in the HBA:

  • The bottom left hole. This is about 3 inches from the right edge of the HBA.
  • The bottom right hole. This is about 1 inch from the right edge of the HBA.
  • The top right hole. This is about 1 inch from the right edge of the HBA.

10. Reinstall the PCIe card into the PCIe riser connector

11. Reinstall the riser board: Slide the riser back until it seats in its slot in the rear panel. Tighten the captive No. 2 Phillips screw securing the riser to the motherboard.

12.Re-connect the cables

13. Replace the main cover

14. Slide the server into the rack.

15. Re-connect the power cords


OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO
AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Boot up system and verify full functionality
