Applies to:

Sun StorageTek SL8500 Modular Library System - Version Not Applicable and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

Customer is requesting the steps to perform a physical partition on a SL8500 library and through ACSLS 8.1.

Fix

This procedure will require a reconfiguration of the libary. ACSLS will have to be shut down.
Backup jobs to this ACSLS will have to be stopped.

 There are some preparations that need to be done prior to the maintenance period.

 1. Verify that the license key for the partitioning of the libray is installed and active (if the license key is not installed or active, you'll not be able to make the partition process):

     SLConsole: Tools --> Hardware Activation --> Feature --> Partitioning

 2. Pursue the Partitioning process in the library:

     SLConsole: Tools --> Partitions --> Select the rail that you want to add to a specific partition --> click on "Apply" --> A pop-up windows will appears indicating that the library will take offline temporarly -->    Click on "Ok"

 NOTE: Is strongly recommeded to use a recent version of SL Console (5.53 or higher). For download it go to https://edelivery.oracle.com.

 Refer to the following ACSLS 8.1 Admin Guide sections for additional details:
 1. Partitioning a Library or Changing Partition Ids.
 2. Moving Cartridges Before Removing an LSM from an ACS" for additional details regarding this procedure.

After a library is re-configured or re-partitioned and if an LSM is removed from an ACS, all cartridges in the LSM become inaccessible. So, before the LSM is removed, all its cartridges should be moved to LSM(s) that will remain in the ACS.

 1. Determine how many tapes are needed to be moved out of the LSM(s). Also determine which LSM has available cells to accomodate the tapes being moved out of the LSM(s). Run this command:
     $ free_cells.sh -a

 2. Vary the LSM being emptied to diagnostic mode to restrict access to this LSM.
     $ vary lsm lsm_id diagnostic

 3. Vary offline all of the drives in the LSM being removed.
     This prevents:
     • Contention for robots in the LSM.
     • Mounts to this LSM.

 4. Run a custom volrpt to output all of the cartridges in the LSM being emptied to a file, using the following command:
     $ volrpt -f custom_volrpt_input -l from_lsm_id > move_vols_list
 Where:
     - custom-volrpt_input is a text file with this entry:
 VOLUME_ID 6
     - from_lsm_id is the LSM ID of the lsm that is being eptied
     - move_vols_list is a file with the volume Ids of the tapes that needs to move out of the LSM

 5. Move the cartridges out of the LSM being emptied, using the following:
    $ moving.sh -f move_vols_list -t dest_lsm_id(s)

 6. Verify if all tapes have been moved successfully
     $ volrpt -l from_lsm_id

 7. Partition the SL8500

 8. Backup the database and then bring down ACSLS (if it is not yet shut down)
    $ bdb.acsss
    $ acsss disable

 9. Export the database
    $ db_export.sh -f

 10. Run acsss_config Option 8 (to get the new library configuration data)
 Reply y (yes) when asked if the ACS is a partitioned library. After replying y (yes), you must enter the partition’s number. Refer to the Admin Guid section on “Configuring or Updating your Library Hardware” for more information.

 11. Restart ACSLS with the new configuration
      $ acsss enable

 12. Start cmd_proc and verify status of library components. You may have to run an ACS Audit.
