Goal

This document describes a  recommended configuration setting for any 9X40 RTDs attached to a VSM.  The setting is 'Standard Label Protection'.

Solution

There is an added measure of protection that can be provided to our customers by enabling a feature that is available on 9X40 tape drives. The feature is called ‘SL PROT’ which is an abbreviation for Standard Label Protection. This feature will not allow the processing of a write command at BOT (Beginning Of Tape) unless the following conditions are met:
1. The write command is for an 80 byte record.
2. VOL1 must be the first 4 characters of the record.
3. The record must not be a tape mark.
Enabling this feature is recommended for all RTDs that are attached to VTSS subsystems.

How to view and/or change the ‘SL PROT’ setting:
To view the current setting:
Place the drive in the online state and hit menu until you see 'View CFG?' in the display. Hit select once then hit menu several times until it displays 'SL Prot Y' or 'SL Prot N'.
To change the current setting:
Place the drive in the offline state and hit menu until you see 'CHG CFG?'. Hit select once then hit menu several times until it displays 'SL Prot N' (this is the default setting). Hit select to toggle between 'SL Prot Y' or 'SL Prot N'.
Hit menu when done.
Remember to save your changes.
