Goal

This document describes hoe to configure NDMP backup of clones to be able to restore them later without the requirement to have the parent snapshot available.

A typical error message for a situation were a backup is taken in an environment which requires the parent snapshot for restore of a clone looks as follows.

exalogic/local/project/share: cannot receive: local origin for clone exalogic/local/project/share@snapshot28Nov11 does not exist

Fix

There are different situations for NDMP backup of a clones on a Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System, dependent on the location of the clone in relation to the project the clone is related.

  1. The easiest way to resolve this limitation and to successfully back up and restore a clone by itself, without backing up its containing project, ZFS_MODE=dataset must be set in the data management application.
  2. In order to successfully back up and restore a project that contains a clone whose origin resides in the same project as the clone, it is recommended to use ZFS_MODE=recursive (the default mode).
  3. To successfully back up and restore a project containing a clone whose origin resides in a project different from the clone, back up the shares of the project individually using ZFS_MODE=dataset.
This even applies to shares that are not clones, although at least one will be a clone.

These limitations may be lifted in a future release of software for the Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System. For more information on NDMP and the "ZFS" backup type, refer to the NDMP Whitepaper provided by Oracle at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/systems-hardware-architecture/ndmp-whitepaper-192164.pdf
