Goal
The purpose of this document is to show what data is required and how to collect it for iSCSI troubleshooting with the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance (ZFSSA).
Fix
Generic Information You Should Collect:
In any ZFS Storage Appliance iSCSI problem, you should collect the following information.
About Software
- Provide the client operating system and version.
About the LUN
Provide the following information about the LUN.
-
Name of LUN you are having problem with.
-
Name of the pool the LUN belongs to.
-
Name of the project that LUN belongs to.
-
IP addresses of initiator and target (ZFSSA).
-
Appliance Software Version of the ZFSSA.
See below examples to see if your iSCSI service is running on your ZFSSA and gather information about the LUN.
oratkyar1:> configuration services iscsi
oratkyar1:configuration services iscsi> show
Properties:
<status> = online
isns = (unset)
isnsserver = (unset)
radiussecret = (unset)
radiusserver = (unset)
In order to display the list of LUNs that are created under a project, please use the following commands. The following example is a LUN called iscsi_lun in the pool-0 in project default.
oratkyar1:>shares
oratkyar1 shares:> set pool=pool-0
oratkyar1 shares:> select default
oratkyar1:shares default> list
Filesystems:
NAME SIZE MOUNTPOINT
mmctest 31K /export/mmctest
ndmp_test 73.2M /export/ndmp_test
adshare 34.5K /export/adshare
ndmp_media 31K /export/ndmp_media
mmctest2 31K /export/mmctest2
LUNs:
NAME SIZE GUID
iscsi_lun 1G 600144F08ADE767F00004EF083780001
Select the iscsi_lun to see further details.
oratkyar1:shares default> select iscsi_lun
oratkyar1:shares default/iscsi_lun> list

Specific Data:
Collecting data at the following data points is required to cover end-to-end iSCSI communication.
- ZFSSA side
- Initiator Host(s)
- iSCSI-related Services
In order to identify the nature of problem iSCSI related information is required. The following documents are useful to collect iSCSI related information on each platform in addition to the generic information about the LUN having problems.
ZFS Storage Appliance
To collect general information about the appliance collect a support bundle:
<Document: 1019887.1> Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to Collect supportbundle using the BUI or CLI.
In order to identify settings for a particular LUN on the appliance, please refer to the following documents.
- <Document 1395320.1> Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to identify target IQN on ZFSSA
- <Document 1395356.1> Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to identify the target group that target IQN belongs on ZFSSA.
- <Document 1395907.1> Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to identify the initiator IQN on ZFSSA.
- <Document 1395943.1> Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to identify the initiator group that IQN belongs to on ZFSSA.
- <Document 1395923.1> Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to check LUN properties on ZFSSA.
To collect a network trace from the appliance:
<Document 1398376.1> Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to get a network trace to assist in troubleshooting network problems.
This document also contains information on how to collect a network trace from the client side for different operating systems.
Initiator Hosts
Use <Document 1398376.1> to collect a network trace for the client along with the following operating system specific information:
Solaris operating system:
Gather an explorer to collect general information on the client.
<Document 1312847.1> Oracle Explorer Data Collector - Product Information Center.
If running Oracle Explorer prior to version 5.7, refer to the following document to collect iSCSI related data.
<Document 1006944.1> iSCSI: What command outputs should be captured to begin troubleshooting iSCSI issues.
Windows Operating system:
The following are useful Microsoft links available to collect network and iSCSI information.

iSCSI Related Services
If TCP/IP is working correctly as assumed at the beginning of this document, the following is a list of services that must be working correctly for iSCSI to function correctly.
- DNS
- iSNS (if used)
- RADIUS (if used)
DNS
DNS is generic network service, thus extensive troubleshooting is out of the scope of this document. The following command run from the CLI of the ZFS Storage Appliance can be used to test if DNS is functioning correctly for a particular hostname.
zfssa:> nslookup ar1.arlab.local
Server: 192.168.0.70
Address: 192.168.0.70#53
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: 192.168.0.95
Address:192.168.0.95
iSNS
In order to find out that a ZFS Storage Appliance is registered successfully to iSNS or not, the IQN is required. Refer to the following documentation to identify IQN.
<Document 1395320.1> Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to identify target IQN on ZFSSA.
In order to identify the initiator IQN on a Solaris host, refer to the following.
<Document 1395907.1> Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to identify the initiator IQN on ZFSSA.
Now use the following document to check the iSNS settings for the ZFSSA.
<Document 1398633.1> Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to check iSNS/RADIUS settings on ZFSSA.
RADIUS
The following document describes how to check the RADIUS and iSNS settings for the ZFSSA:
<Document 1398633.1> Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to check iSNS/RADIUS settings on ZFSSA.
