DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
- WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED: Knowledge of Sun Blade 6000 architecture and ILOM
- TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes
- TASK COMPLEXITY: 0

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Sun Blade Disk Module Firmware update and information
- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?: Disk activity on the disk modules should be halted.
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE: Review following information.

Sun Blade 6000 Disk Modules and Sun Blade 6000 SAS-NEMs both contain SAS expanders. It is critical that these expanders have the correct firmware. The firmware versions must match for both devices.

The following NEMs  can be used with Sun Blade Disk Modules.

Sun Blade 6000 Multi-Fabric Network Express Module (abbreviated Multi-Fabric
NEM)
Sun Blade 6000 10GbE Multi-Fabric Network Express Module (abbreviated 10GbE
Multi-Fabric NEM)
Sun Blade 6000 Virtualized Multi-Fabric 10GbE Network Express Module
(abbreviated Virtualized 10GbE Multi-Fabric NEM)

The server blade firmware, OS drivers and HBA disk controller firmware (REM or onboard) must also all be at the required levels to support Sun Blade 6000 Disk Modules.

For the supported levels of drivers and firmware required refer to the documentation listed on the Sun Blade 6000 Disk Module Documentation URL https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19045-01/blade.6000disk/index.html

To upgrade the SAS expander firmware on both the disk modules and the NEM expanders the Common Array Manager (CAM) or the Oracle Hardware Management Pack 2.0 (fwupdate utility) is used. Please refer to table 11-1 in the Sun Blade 6000 Disk Module Administration Guide. The method used is dependent on the firmware revision.

A simplified version of the table is reproduced below to identify the upgrade method

Sun Blade 6000 Disk Module and SAS NEM Firmware

Firmware         Base Firmware                 Description
Revision        Delivery Platform
----------------------------------------------------------------
5.02.10         Common Array                    Initial release
(502A)          Manager 6.1.2

5.02.14         Common Array                    Added second source to monitor disk module temperature and voltage
(502E)          Manager 6.4.1

5.04.03        Oracle  Hardware                  Support added for SAS-1/SAS-2 device coexistence
               Management   Pack 2.0
               (fwupdate  utility)

For Common Array Manager refer to URL https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/documentation/disk-device-194280.html

For Oracle hardware Management Pack refer to URL https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/documentation/sys-mgmt-networking-190072.html

The fwupdate method is described in the following document SAS-1/SAS-2 Compatibility Upgrade Guide For the Sun Blade 6000 Modular System. Note that both the SAS element of the NEM and the Disk Blade is updated at same time and the correct SAS firmware for the type of NEM installed must also be downloaded see URL http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19045-01/blade.6000disk/index.html

The use of CAM to upgrade disk module and associated NEMs is documented in Chapter 11 of the Sun Blade 6000 Disk Module Administration Guide - pages 109 to 116 http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19045-01/blade.6000disk/index.html

LSIUTIL

Where to Obtain the lsiutil Software
On My Oracle Support download the latest Sun Blade 6000 Disk Module Firmware Patch

Installing lsiutil
Download lsiutil and unzip it in a temporary directory. It will create operating system-specific subdirectories. If you are running lsiutil on a SPARC blade, use the Solaris subdirectory. Otherwise, use the Solaris x86 subdirectory.

APPENDIX B - Sun Blade 6000 Disk Module Service Manual

This utility should be installed on all on all the server blades in your chassis that are running the Solaris OS and have LSI host bus adapters. A persistent mappings snapshot file for every one of these server blades should be archived in a safe location. These mappings are required for certain procedures such when the LSI controller is replaced. Requirement and procedures are well documented in the Sun Blade 6000  Disk Module Administration Guide, Sun Blade 6000 Disk Module, Service Manual and Sun Blade 6000 Multi-Fabric Network Express Module User's Guide at https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19045-01/blade.6000disk/index.html

Troubleshooting

Basic top level information such as power, service and error LEDs can be obtained from CMM by running following command

where x is the slot number of the disk blade

-> show -o table /CH/BLx -l all

Review Event Log

cd /CMM/logs/event

show list

Example output might look like:

ID Date/Time Class Type Severity
