and data collection advice.

Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS:
WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:
Knowledge of Sun Blade 6000 architecture and ILOM

TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes

TASK COMPLEXITY: 0

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS:
PROBLEM OVERVIEW
Upgrading NEM firmware and collecting snapshot from 10GbE M2 VMF NEM ILOM.

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?
Chassis and NEM be powered on when these actions are being performed.
It is advisable that all I/O and disk activity associated with the
NEM are halted before beginning firmware upgrades.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

How to determine current firmware versions on Sun Blade 6000 10GbE M2 VMF NEM.

Note: There can be two NEMs installed in a chassis NEM0 and NEM1. The NEM number is determined by the physical slot in which the NEM is installed.

From CMM ILOM CLI

-> show -d properties /CH/NEMx

Where x is the 0 or 1, depending on the slot the NEM is installed in.

The output will be similar to the following

/CH/NEM1
Properties:
type = Network Express Module
ipmi_name = NEM1
system_identifier = SUNSP-0000000000
fru_name = SUN BLADE 6000 VIRTUALIZED MULTI-FABRIC 10GE NEM M2
fru_version = FW 3.0.10.16, SAS 5.3.4.0
fru_part_number = 540-7961-02
fault_state = OK
load_uri = (none)
clear_fault_action = (none)
prepare_to_remove_status = NotReady
prepare_to_remove_action = (none)
return_to_service_action = (none)

FW 3.0.10.16 is the NEM ILOM firmware version
SAS 5.3.4.0 is the SAS2 firmware expander version

From the ILOM BUI select CMM in left hand panel
select system information > Components
Click on NEM  (eg /CH/NEM0)
A pop window will appear containing the firmware information

How to upgrade Firmware on Sun Blade 6000 10GbE M2 VMF NEM
.

There are two types of firmware to update on the NEM. SAS-2 Expander firmware and NEM SP ILOM firmware. You can update both the ILOM and SAS expander firmware through the SunBlade 6000 chassis CMM ILOM

Note: NEM ILOM and SAS firmware updates are performed from the CMM. Attempting to perform a NEM SAS firmware update from the NEM SP either through the network or serial port will cause the update to fail.
Note:  CMM ILOM must be at 3.0.9 or above to be able to update NEM firmware.

CLI Method

1. Download the firmware that you need from the Oracle software download site: https://support.oracle.com.
     a.  At the Oracle Support site, login.
          An account is required to download software. You must register if you do not have an account.
     b. Click the Patches & Updates tab.
     c. Click Product or Family (Advance search).
     d. The product is Sun Blade 6000 10GbE VMF NEM M2.
     e. In the Release field, click Select up to 10 and then click the arrow next to the Sun Blade 6000 10GbE VMF NEM M2 folder.
     f. Select (check) the latest two software releases.
     g. Click the Search button.
     h. Download the latest available firmware package and extract it to an accessible folder on the network.

2. From a network connected terminal, log in to the CMM ILOM CLI as Administrator
     $ ssh username@cmm_ipaddress
    Where username is the Administrator user name (usually root) and cmm_ipaddress is the IP address of the ILOM CMM.

3. Enter the password.
    The ILOM CLI prompt appears.
     ->

4. Change directories to the blade slot containing the NEM to be upgraded:

-> cd /CH/NEMx

   where NEMx is the NEM to be upgraded.

5. Enter the following command:
    For ILOM firmware
-> load -source http://http_server_ipaddress/firmware-version.pkg

    For SAS expander firmware:

-> load -source http://http_server_ipaddress/firmware-version.pkg

Where http_server_ipaddress is the domain name or IP address of your HTTP server where you copied the image files, and firmware-version is the name of the .pkg file.

Note: The firmware update process can take several minutes.
The following transfer methods are available: TFTP, FTP, SCP, HTTP, HTTPS, SFTP.

6. Repeat the process if you are updating another firmware package.

7. When the process completes, ensure that the proper firmware version was installed. Enter the following command:
-> show -d properties /CH/NEMx

It may be necessary to reset the NEM SP.

There is also a GUI update method that is documented in the manual below but at the time of writing this document the cli method proved more reliable.

More detailed description of update procedures are documented in the Sun Blade 6000 Virtualized Multi-Fabric 10GE M2 NEM User's Guide
https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19530-01/index.html

How to collect data from Sun Blade 6000 10GbE M2 VMF NEM.

When investigating issues concerning the NEM the CMM event log should be examined.

The NEM ILOM has its own event log and it should also be examined.

-> ls /CMM/logs/event/list

A snapshot should be taken from the CMM and also the NEM ILOM for investigation.

How to connect to Sun Blade 6000 10GbE M2 VMF NEM ILOM

CLI

1. Use serial management connection on NEM.
   log on as root

2. ssh to CMM as root and log on

->  start /CH/NEMx/SP/cli

3) If an IP address has been configured for the NEM Service Processor then it will be possible to ssh as root directly to the NEM

GUI

1. From the chassis (CMM) GUI display click on NEM displayed on Left Hand Panel.
2. If an IP address has been configured for the NEM Service Processor then a browser can be pointed directly at the NEM Service processor.

Note:  That the physical network connection is via the CMM net management port as it would be for a Blade ILOM but the serial connection is directly to the NEM.

Zoning

The availability to server Blades of storage module resources is managed through the CMM by the Sun Blade Zone Manager

The Sun Blade Zone Manager is available in the Sun Blade 6000 Modular System CMM SW 3.0.10 or later, which includes Oracle ILOM 3.0.10 and later.

The Sun Blade Zone Manager use and interface is documented in the following manual.
