Goal
This document explains how to Disable/Enable the CIFS Memory Wrapper with a Server Comment
Fix
The CIFS Memory Wrapper traces memory allocation and release for the CIFS protocol stack. This wrapper can be enabled and disabled by the CIFS Server Comment.
Hardware and Software Versions
Hardware Software
All models 03.01.09 and higher R3.1
All models 03.02.00 and higher R3
The installed release must be 03.01.09 or higher R3.1 revision. All versions of R3.2 and R3.3 contain the CIFS Memory Wrapper which is enabled by default.
Release 4.0 may disable the CIFS Memory Wrapper by default, which would require a CIFS Comment to enable tracing.
Details
Memory tracing is enabled by default on releases from 03.01.09 up to 03.03.xx. The CIFS Memory Wrapper may be disabled or enabled by setting a value of "0" [Enabled] or "1" [Disabled] for the PDS_MALLOC_SMBD flag in the CIFS Server Comment field.
The CIFS Memory Wrapper should not be disabled unless explicitly advised to do so by Oracle Technical Support.
The Failure History should always be cleared before and after any warmstart.
On Axiom systems below 03.03.00, if the Slammer CU has been running continuously for almost a year, check memory before warmstarting.
ALL Existing CIFS connections will be closed as part of this process.
Multiple CIFS Configuration flags can be set in the Server Comment field. Separate multiple comments with a space. Task, consisting of a collection of discrete instructions, numbering eight or fewer steps. Include error recognition and recovery activities, as appropriate.>
Log into the Axiom as an administrator account.
Select the File Server to modify.
Select the CIFS tab
Enter the desired value for the Server Comment. Separate multiple comments with spaces.
PDS_MALLOC_SMBD=0 Disables the CIFS Memory Wrapper
PDS_MALLOC_SMBD=1 Enables the CIFS Memory Wrapper. This is the default for 03.01.09 through 03.03.xx. Deleting the PDS_MALLOC_SMBD=0 comment has the same effect.
Save the configuration.
Restart the CIFS Server
Restart the CIFS Services
The CIFS component must be restarted in order to make the change effective. This will close all existing CIFS connections. This can be done by warmstarting all of the NAS Slammer CUs, or it can be done by "significantly" modifying the CIFS contiguration. A simple way to modify the CIFS server is to change the WINS Server 3 IP Address, then set it back to its original value.
