Goal

This article describes the process and requirements for interfacing to the RS232 or USB serial console on the back of a Axiom Brick.

Fix

Prerequisites

One (1) Brick Console Cable.
One (1) Client computer with a RS232 or USB port.
One (1) RS232 or USB Terminal Application.

The Brick Console is available as a kit, part number 1450-00290-30 Cable Kit

  • 6051-00081-00 PC to Brick Cable, 3.5MM Stereo Mini-Jack-M to DB9-F, 2.0M
  • 6051-00097-00 USB to DB9 RS232 Cable, 6Ft

Details

Interface to the Brick console should only be conducted by authorized personnel. Significant adverse system impact, including irrecoverable data loss can occur if the procedures are not executed properly.

OVERVIEW OF HARDWARE:

The Brick Console port is a 1/8 Inch Mini Stereo Jack. There is one port per RAID Controller. The ports are circled in red in the following image:
1389622_1_PIC1

This port is connected to a workstation Serial Port with a Console Cable (The cable may be supplied as two pieces, a Stereo to RJ-45 Telco Cable and a DB-9 to RJ-45 Telco Adapter. For systems without serial ports, a USB-Serial Convertor may be supplied).

The cable looks similar to the following image:

The following table describes the pin relationship between the DB9 connector and the 1/8 Inch Mini Stereo Jack.

INTERFACE PROCEDURE

Connect the Brick Console Cable to the 1/8 Inch Mini Stereo Jack on a RAID controller or RC. RC0 is located on the right side - RC1 on the left side when facing the back of the brick.
Connect the DB9 end of the Brick Console Cable to the RS232 port on the client computer. If USB, connect the USB port to the client computer
Open a RS232 / USB terminal application on the computer (i.e. Hyperterminal, Putty, etc.). If USB, determine the serial port number being emulated from device manager.

Connect to the serial port with the following settings:
115,200 Bits per Second
8N1 or 8 Bits, No Parity, 1 Stop Bit
No Flow Control All hardware and software flow control must be disabled

Press the enter key. If the connection is successful, a Password prompt should appear.

For all SATA and FC RAID controllers, the password is tardis. For FC Expansion controllers, the password is gemini. Enter the correct password to log into the brick.

Configure the RS232 terminal application to capture all printable output from the session
