FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
What: A hard disk drive in the NAS head
Where:  hostname/Chassis S/N  HDD:XXX
Why: Drive faulted by alert, or replacement needed determined by SR-owner.

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

Note: All drives in 7110 and 7120 systems are supposed to be replaced with the system powered on and active but please be aware of Caution 2 in Parts Section Below.

Note: All HDD's in the front of a 7120 system are data-drives, system-drives are located in the rear of the system.

Note: For 7110 HDD 0(Locate at the bottom left corner) and HDD 1 (Located directly above HDD 0).

Preferably the customer should activate the locator LED on the faulted drive.

This is done by:

1. BUI-method: Go to Maintenance -> Hardware -> Click "Show Details  under the NAS-head picture. Click the locator icon for the faulted/failed/missing drive.

2. CLI-method:
Log in to the CLI and at the  systemname   prompt run this command:

maintenance hardware select chassis-000 select disk

Prompt will change to:  systemname :maintenance chassis-000 disk>

Now run the command:

list

to display the drives

Now select the faulted drive by running:

select disk-???  ( where ? is the number of the drive required - in this case 002)

Now you can activate the locator-LED by running:

set locate=true

then type

commit

Now the locator LED should be visible on the drive.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
1. Removing the drive
1.1 Locate the drive, either by locating the amber fault LED, or if customer has activate the locator led.
1.2 On the drive you plan to remove, push the storage drive release button to open the latch.
1.3 Grasp the latch and pull the drive out of the drive slot.

2. Installing the drive
2.1 Slide the drive into the drive slot until it is fully seated.
2.2 Close the latch to lock the drive in place.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Verify that a resilver process has started on the appliance by checking the BUI.

Remember to have the customer de-activate the locator LED on the new drive either by the BUI or the CLI

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE :

Please liaise with the customer that the BUI shows the replaced drive as being active and Resilvering.

PARTS NOTE:

Verify in the System Handbook that the received HDD is a valid part for this system.

Caution: The latch is not an ejector. Do not bend it too far to the right. Doing so can damage the latch.

Caution: Whenever you remove a storage drive, you should replace it with another storage drive or a filler panel before you power on the server; otherwise the server might overheat due to improper airflow.
