ISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
- WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED:
Familiar with the SL500 and LTO tape drive.
- TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes
- TASK COMPLEXITY: 0
FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
The bezel on the LTO tape drive is damaged / defective and requires replacement.
- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:
All work to the LTO tape drive should be stopped. Drive should be taken offline to the OS and software application.
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE:
The tape drives are installed in the rear of the base and drive expansion modules.
Caution:
ESD Sensitive: Damage may occur to the drive cards.
Removal of the drive:
1. Be sure that all jobs assigned to the drive have been ended.
At the rear of the library:
2. Disconnect the Fibre Channel cable from the right side of the drive tray.
For SCSI drives, remove the SCSI cable from the right side of the drive tray.
3. Loosen the spring-loaded screw on the right side of the drive tray until the screw is disengaged.
Caution:
Possible damage to the drive and bezel: Support the drive to a near horizontal position during removal to prevent the front of the bezel and the drive catching on the roof or floor of the drive opening.
4. Slide the drive/tray assembly out of the drive bay and set it on a table or cart.
5. Note the position of the target on the mounted bezel.
Caution:
Possible damage to bezel: the mounting tabs on the bezel are thin and easily broken. Be careful when following the next steps.
6. Press the side of the bezel to disengage the mounting tabs from the holes in the drives's front cover.
7. Pivot the bezel away from the front of the drive until the mounting tabs on the left side can be easily
removed from their slots.
Note:
For IBM LTO 3 and 4 only: please verify that the position of dip switch #5 on the bottom back of the replacement drive is consistent with the drive being replaced. This specific switch controls the communication method (ADI vs. LDI) for the drive. Improper switch position can cause communication issues in the library.
Replacement of the Bezel:
8. Orient the target at the bottom of the cartridge slot in the bezel.
Caution:
Possible damage to bezel: The mounting tabs on the IBM bezel can be broken. Be careful when following the next steps.
9. Insert the mounting tabs on the left side of the bezel into the two mounting slots along the left side of drive
cartridge opening.
10. Swing the bezel toward the cover surface.
11. Gently press the side of the bezel until the tabs can be inserted into the holes.
Caution:
Possible damage to drive and bezel: Support the drive to a near horizontal position during installation to prevent the front of the bezel and the drive catching on the roof or floor of the drive opening.
12. Slide the drive/tray assembly into the drive bay until it is fully mated with the drive connector and the tab
on the right side is flush against the chassis.
13. Finger-tighten the spring-loaded screw on the right side of the drive tray.
14. Plug the Fibre Channel cable into the right side of the tray.
For SCSI drives, plug the SCSI cable into the right side of the drive tray.
Note:
Fibre Channel drives do not require configuring. The system remembers the drives.
The old bezel can be discarded as it is considered a consumable item.
