Goal

How to Resolve 9840/9940/T10000/LTO Drive Communication Errors.

Solution

PROBLEM OVERVIEW:

Unable to communicate with drive from server or drive not being seen from the switch. Excessive I/O errors being reported between drive and server.

CONFIRM THE FAULT BY CHECKING:
GBIC / SFP - Ensure that the GBICs are securely seated on the hosts and targets. Plugging and unplugging cables can cause the GBIC / SFP to become unseated. Ensure that the GBICs / SFPs are the same speed (1,2,4 gigabit) and type (optical nonOFC or copper).

CABLES - Ensure that all cables are attached. The "transmit port" of each device must be connected to the "receive port" of the next device. Normally (looking down the barrel of the connector) the "receive port" of a GBIC / SFP is on the left, and the "transmit port" is on the right (if a copper GBIC / SFP, longer edge of D-shell on top; if an optical GBIC / SFP, keyed side on the bottom) - There should be no sharp bends in the cable (you may break the optics cable).

All activity on the suspected drive should be discontinue from the server.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

Should it be determined that the SFP module is defective, order part via standard channels.
Once SFP is acquired, replace the module using proper anti-static precautions.

CONFIRM THE FIX BY:

Verify drive in question is seen by the server/host.   Run basic R/W tests from the server/host to verify functionality of drive and path to the drive.

Refer to the Sun Service Handbook, locate the PN of the SFP under the parts list for the Tape Product.
