Goal

How to Resolve an L9 Drive Communication Problem

Solution

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: System not able to access tape drive

CONFIRM THE FAULT BY CHECKING:
System shows drive offline or not available
L9 shows drive as not available

WHAT ACTIONS NEED TO TAKEN:
-Have customer queue tape drive activities
-Check that power is on and available to drives
-Check that library power is available
-Check L9 for drive status, is it communicating?
-Check that drive is firmly seated in library connector
-Check that drive configuration matches system requirements
-Check that the problem isn't media and verify with good media
-Check that there is host connectivity to the drive
-Run diagnostics to the drive, if fails, replace FRU
-Record specific error code and messages associated with failure in case notes
-Record all relevant visual observations of error in case notes
-Record final fix in case notes

CONFIRM THE FIX BY:
Customer system is able to communicate with drive at sub-application level
Software application is able to use drive

NOTE: Under NO circumstances show tape drives be returned with Media still inside the drive. If a tape is stuck in a drive, contact the Tape Hardware Support team for instructions on how to remove the tape with an email to [email protected] include the SR/case number in the subject line of the email.
