WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:(IS A SITE ENGINEER AVAILABLE?)
Note – The DDR3 memory DIMMs are customer-replaceable units and do not require an authorized service provider for replacement.

TIME ESTIMATE: 30 minutes
FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
1. Prepare the server for service.
a. Power off the server and disconnect the power cord (or cords) from the server power supply (or supplies).
b. Extend the server into the maintenance position.
c. Attach an antistatic wrist strap.
d. Remove the top cover.
WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
2. Removing the faulty DDR3 DIMM(s).
a. To identify the location of the faulty DDR3 DIMMS, press the Fault Remind button on the motherboard.
b. Note the location of faulty DIMMs. Faulty memory DIMMs are identified if their DIMM fault is on (amber color) at the motherboard. Otherwise, the LED is off and the DIMM is operating properly.
c. To remove the faulty DIMM do the following:
i. Rotate both DIMM slot ejectors outward as far as they will go. (The DIMM is partially ejected from the socket)
ii. Carefully lift the DIMM straight up to remove it from the socket.
d. Replace each faulty DIMM with either another DIMM of the same rank size (quad, dual or single rank) or a DIMM filler panel.
Caution – If you are not immediately inserting a replacement DIMM into the empty DIMM socket, insert a DIMM filler panel in the socket to ensure adequate cooling and reduce the possibility of a system shutdown.
Installing DIMMS
3. Unpack the replacement DDR3 DIMMs and place them on an antistatic mat.
4. Ensure that the replacement DIMMs match the sizes as the DIMMs they are replacing. You must not replace a dual-rank DIMM with a quad-rank DIMM and vice versa. If you violate this rule, the performance of the server might be adversely affected.
5. Install the DIMMs
a. Ensure that the ejector tabs are in the open position.
b. Line up the replacement DIMM with the connector (FIGURE 4-6). Align the notch in the DIMM with the key in the connector, to ensure that the DIMM is oriented correctly.
c. Push the DIMM into the connector until the ejector tabs lock the DIMM inplace. If the DIMM does not easily seat into the connector, verify that the notch in the DIMM is aligned with the key in the connector. If the notch is not aligned, damage to the DIMM might occur.
6. Repeat Step 5 until all replacement DIMMs are installed.
7. Return the server to operation.
a. Install the top cover.
b. Return the server to the normal rack position.
c. Reconnect the power cord(s) to the power supply (or supplies) and power on the server. Verify that the AC Present LED is lit.
8. Use ILOM to clear DDR3 DIMM faults.
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
1. Best is to fully monitor the BIOS startup to make sure all expected memory is present.
2. Bootup the OS
3. If the OS is Solaris, check fmadm/fmdump command outputs
4. Check total memory available and monitor error logs to check any new memory error messages
