Fix
DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:
T5120/5220 training recommended but not required
TIME ESTIMATE: 40 minutes
TASK COMPLEXITY: 0
FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS
PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Memory/DIMM Failure
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?
A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution. The customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown. Then power down the system and disconnect the Power Cord.
WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
A) Identify Faulty FB-DIMMs Using the FB-DIMM Fault Locator Button or show faulty command
1. Extend server to maintenance position.
2. Disconnect power from server.
3. Remove top cover.
4. Open air duct to gain to access FB-DIMM Fault Locator button.
5. Press FB-DIMM Fault Locator button on motherboard.
6. Note FB-DIMM next to illuminated LED.
7. Ensure that all other FB-DIMMs are seated correctly in their slots.
B) Remove FB-DIMMs
1. Disconnect & stow the hard drive data cable (Sparc Enterprise only).
2. Rotate air duct up & toward front of system.
3. Press Fault Locator button on motherboard to identify FB-DIMMs to be replaced.
4. Push down on ejector tabs on each side of FB-DIMM until FB-DIMM is released.
5. Grasp top corners of faulty FB-DIMM and lift it out of its slot.
6. Place FB-DIMM on antistatic mat.
7. Repeat Step 4 through Step 6 for any other FB-DIMMs to be removed.
8. If you do not plan to install replacement FB-DIMMs now, install filler panels in empty slots.
C) Install Replacement FB-DIMMs
1. Unpackage replacement FB-DIMMs & place on antistatic mat.
2. Ensure ejector tabs on connector that will receive FB-DIMM are in open position.
3. Align FB-DIMM notch with key in connector.
4. Push FB-DIMM into connector until ejector tabs lock FB-DIMM in place.
5. Repeat Step 2 through Step 4 until all new FB-DIMMs are installed.
10. Reconnect hard drive cable (SPARC Enterprise only).
11. Install top cover.
12. Slide server into rack.
13. Connect power cords.
D) Verify Successful Replacement of Faulty FB-DIMMs
1. Access ILOM -> prompt.
2. Use show faulty command to determine how to clear fault.
3. Use set command to enable FB-DIMM that was disabled by POST.
4. Perform the following steps to verify the repair:
a. Set virtual keyswitch to diag so that POST will run in Service mode.
b. Power cycle system.
c. Switch to system console to view POST output.
d. Return virtual keyswitch to Normal mode.
e. Switch to system console & type Solaris OS fmadm faulty command.
5. Switch to ILOM command shell.
6. Run show faulty command.
7. Switch to system console & type fmadm repair command with UUID.
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
WHAT ACTION DOES THE FE/CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Boot system and monitor boot sequence for errors. Test functionality of system:
1. Run the Solaris "fmadm faulty" and SP/ILOM "show faulty" command (if only ALOM is supported run "showfaults -v" command) to verify that the fault has been cleared.
2. Perform one of the following tasks based on your verification results:
* If the previous steps did not clear the fault, refer to doc 1004229.1 for information about the tools and methods you can use to diagnose and clear component faults.
* If the previous steps indicate that no faults have been detected, then the component has been replaced successfully. No further action is required
3. Restart software applications per applicable administration guides to resume system operation.
