FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

PROBLEM OVERVIEW:

Defective memory mezzanine

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?

A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.

System needs to be shutdown by customer

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

*** Follow standard ESD procedures to avoid Electrostatic Discharge

1. Power off the server
2. Disconnect all power cables
3. Remove the Top Cover
-Unlatch the fan module door by pulling the release tabs back to release the door
-Press the top cover release button and slide the top cover to the rear about a 0.5 inch
-Lift up and remove the cover
4. Remove the shipping bracket
Note - The shipping bracket is not required for normal system operation. Some systems might not have a shipping bracket installed
5. Open the release levers on either side of the memory mezzanine assembly
6. Lift the memory mezzanine assembly up and out of the system, then place on on antistatic mat
7. Remove the mezzanine air duct and transfer the FB-DIMMs to the new memory mezzanine assembly
8. Ensure that the release levers are extended on the new memory mezzanine
9. Lower the new memory mezzanine assembly into the chassis. Ensure that the connectors between the memory mezzanine assembly and the motherboard are aligned
10. Close the levers to lock the memory mezzanine assembly into place.
11. Install the air duct.
12. Install the shipping bracket (if present)
13. Install the top cover
14. Attach the power cables
15. Power on the server

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE FE/CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Boot system and monitor boot sequence for errors. Test functionality of system:
1. Run the Solaris "fmadm faulty" and SP/ILOM "show faulty" command (if only ALOM is supported run "showfaults -v" command) to verify that the fault has been cleared.
2. Perform one of the following tasks based on your verification results:
   * If the previous steps did not clear the fault, refer to doc 1004229.1 for information about the tools and methods you can use to diagnose and clear component faults.
   * If the previous steps indicate that no faults have been detected, then the component has been replaced successfully. No further action is required
3. Restart software applications per applicable administration guides to resume system operation.

PARTS NOTES:

There are two different memory mezzanines:
540-7792 that is compatible with 1.5V and 1.8V VDD/VDDQ DIMMs
541-2351 that is only compatible with 1.8V VDD/VDDQ DIMMs
You need to order the right replacement part for your customer
