FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Disk fault

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
Hard drives in SPARC Enterprise T5140/T5240 server are capable of being removed and installed while the server is running. Then operating system should be configured by the customer such that the disk drive is free for replacement. e.g. The disk may be part of Solaris Volume Manager, Veritas Volume Manager, mounted file-system, raw partitions, etc. A data backup may be required to restore data onto a replaced disk depending on situation and customer demand.

NOTE: the "cfgadm" commands in this document (and in the Service manual) are for individual drives that are not part of RAID volumes. When a drive is part of a RAID volume, you do not need to unconfigure it before swapping it with a new drive. WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

A) Confirm HDD LED Status
Confirm whether a group of three status LEDs of each HDD, the front and rear panel Service Required LEDs are lit when the system detects a hard drive fault.

B) Remove HDD

1. At the Solaris prompt, type the cfgadm -al command. This will list all drives in the device tree, including drives that are not configured.

2. Type cfgadm -c unconfigure to unconfigure the disk.

3. Wait until the blue Ready-to-Remove LED lights. This LED will help you identify which drive is unconfigured and can be removed.


4. On the drive you plan to remove, push the hard drive release button to open the latch.

C) Install HDD

1. Align the replacement drive to the drive slot.

2. With the latch open, slide the hard drive into its bay until it is fully seated. Then close the latch to secure the drive.

3. At the Solaris prompt, type the cfgadm -al command. This will list all drives in the device tree, including drives that are not configured.

4. Type cfgadm -c configure command to configure the disk.

5. Wait until the blue Ready-to-Remove LED is no longer lit on the drive that you installed.

6. At the Solaris prompt, type the cfgadm -al command to list all drives in the device tree, including any drives that are not configured.

D) As sames as above A), confirm HDD LED Status again

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Reconfigure disk as previously configured. e.g. part of raid set or mounted file-system or raw partition or other.
