How to Resolve SL500 Power Supply Problems

Solution

PROBLEM OVERVIEW:

The power supply breaker trips.

- Defective power supply
- Defective power cable
- Incorrect power source from wall
- Defective tape drive

Customer should have library offline to OS and application.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

1. Look at the back of the rack.

2. Is the power cord seated properly? Yes: Go to Step 3.
No: Reset the power cord.

3. Make sure that all the tape drives are seated properly.

4. Does the breaker trip?
Yes: Go to Step 5.

5. Remove each tape drive in turn. Does the breaker trip?
Yes: Power on the tape drives, one at a time, to see which one causes the breaker to trip.
Replace the defective one.
No: Go to the next step.

6. Disconnect the power cable from the customer receptacle. At the male pins on the power connector, use an volt/ohmmeter (set to ohms) to check between
the following male pins on the power cable:
-1 phase pin to GND = open
-2nd phase pin to GND = open
-1 phase pin to 2nd phase pin = <1 Mohm
-GND pin to frame = short
Are the measurements correct?
Yes: Go to Step 7.
No: Go to Step 8.

7. Use an ohmmeter to check the continuity of all three wires in the power cable.
Is there continuity?
Yes: Go to Step 8.
No: Replace the cable.

8. Plug the power cord back into the customer's outlet.
Leave the library end of the cord unplugged.

9. Switch your volt/ohmmeter to AC volts and measure the line voltage at the cable. Nominal voltage for North America is 100-120 VAC. Nominal voltage for
international is 200-240 VAC.
Is the line voltage correct?
Yes: Go to Step 10.
No: Notify the customer.

10.Plug the cable into the power supply. Does the breaker still trip?

Yes: Replace the power supply.

Bring library and drives online to OS and application. Verify everything is available for use.
