Goal

How to Audit an Expanded SL8500.
How Volume Addresses Change When the SL8500 is Expanded.

Fix

Please follow steps 6 through 9 in the ELS Configuring HSC and VTCS guide, in the section titled 'Adding and Removing SL8500 or SL3000 Expansion Modules'.

The general rule is to audit the highest three panels in each LSM (rail) in the expanded SL8500 first. Then you can audit the entire LSM and you will not lose information about any volumes.

The reason to audit the highest panels first is to find the volumes whose addresses changed and update their addresses. Otherwise, if Audit looks in the volume's old address first, and does not find the volume, Audit will delete the volume.

Specifically:

  • The goal is to find the volumes in their new addresses first. When Audit finds a cartridge in a new address, it checks the old address (recorded in the HSC CDS) to see if this is a duplicate volume. (The panel number in the old volume's address is now assigned to a panel in the Storage Expansion Module that was added to the SL8500.) When Audit does not find the volume at its old address, HSC updates the CDS with volume's new address.
  • If HSC audits the volume's old address first, it will not find the volume there and will delete it. When the volumes are found in their new addresses, Audit will re-add them. However, scratch status and cleaning cartridge usage will be lost.

For this reason, please audit the three panels on the Customer Interface Module first. These are the three highest numbered panels in each LSM in the SL8500. Do not just run an LSM or ACS Audit, because these audit all of the panels in ascending sequence. This causes information about volumes in the Customer Interface Module to be lost.

If you have to remove any cartridges to attach the Storage Expansion Module, place them in an empty panel in the Storage Expansion Module. Audit this panel after auditing the three panels in the Customer Interface Module. This guarantees Audit will find these cartridges in their new addresses before Audit fails to find them in their old addresses.
