Goal

This article addresses how to diagnose a broken tape.

Fix

Steps to Follow
Diagnosis of Broken Tape Issue from a first touch perspective:

 

Customer Complaint: Broken Tape

 

Step 1. Tape can unload using "unload command" from the application or the server OS.     NO -> GO TO STEP 4

 

Step 2. Tape loads into another drive without problem.                                                                NO -> GO TO STEP 1

 

Step 3. Log VOLSER of tape and suspect Drive Serial number into Problem Case.  Notify customer that there does not appear to be a problem with the tape at this time. If yes, GO TO STEP 16.

 

Step 4. Is the drive accessible to the customer?                                                                             NO -> GO TO STEP 12

 

Step 5. Does tape unload from drive by pushing unload button on the Op Panel.                    NO -> GO TO STEP 10

 

Step 6. Is the tape broken at the leader?                                                                                         NO -> GO TO STEP 8

 

Step 7. Set tape aside to have the leader replaced, using leader repair kit. Reload cartridge into good drive, copy the data off of the tape and discard the tape. Log the serial number of the drive into the Problem Case.   GO TO STEP 15.

 

Step 8. Is the tape damaged other then broken leader.                                                                NO -> GO TO STEP 3

 

Step 9. Has the drive broken tape before?                                                                                   NO -> GO TO STEP 13

 

Step 10. Does tape unload from the drive by power cycling the drive?                                   NO -> GO TO STEP 12

 

Step 11. GO TO STEP 6.

 

Step 12. Page the CSE  via MOS to check out problem with drive.  Update Problem Case with details of what has been done, drive serial number and VOLSER effected.  Assign case to CSE.                                GO TO STEP 15.

 

Step 13. Page the CSE via MOS to come to the account with a replacement drive.  Update Problem Case with details of what has been done, drive serial number and VOLSER effected.  Assign case to CSE.      GO TO STEP 15.

 

Step 14. Set tape aside for further evaluation by media vendor. Update Problem Case with details of what has been done, drive serial number and VOLSER effected.

 

Step 15. Exit
