Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

Provide customers and Oracle field support with procedure for replacing a physical tape drive attached to backend of VTL server.

Solution

Procedure to replace a failed physical drive:
1. Verify the failed physical tape drive is not in use: there aren't migrations virtual-to-physical, direct access, etc...

2.  Record 'device id' of current drive (in VTL Console GUI, under VirtualTape Library System>Physical Tape Libraries, highlight drive and 'device id' will be in right panel)

3. Unassign physical drive from VTL (in VTL Console GUI, under VirtualTape Library System>Physical Tape Libraries,  right click on drive to be removed and select 'Unassign')

4. Remove/replace physical drive in physical library

5. If using ACSLS,  reconfigure ACSLS database to update the new parameters from the new physical tape drive (wwpn, serial number): /"config drive panel_id/" where panel_id for L700 will be 0,0,0.

Example, For VTL with device id  0,2, 1,12, enter 'config drive 0,2,1'

Note: Doing this reconfiguration, you will avoid restarting ACSLS.

6. Assign new drive to VTL (in VTL Console GUI, under VirtualTape Library System>Physical Tape Libraries, right click physical library name, select 'Assign', and add device id recorded in step 1).

7. Rescan the HBA via VTL Console GUI.

8. Check if the new disk is listed in the VTL.

8. Perform a test migrate/export to validate new configuration. Follow the VTL User Guide for detail on how to do it.

9. Check in the VTL gui if the new physical tape drive  have new wwpn, new serial number and same ACSLS position

Refer to VTL User's Guide or ACSLS ICAG for details on any step above.
