Goal

This article describes where to locate the UIM for Sun StorageTek[TM] tape drives and how to obtain the UIM for Sun StorageTek transports. It also addresses the following questions:

Is there a UIM for Sun StorageTek[TM] T10K drives?
Is there a UIM for Sun StorageTek[TM] 9840 drives?
Is there a UIM for Sun StorageTek[TM] 9940 drives?
Is there a UIM for Sun StorageTek[TM] 9490 drives?

Fix

Steps to Follow:
To acquire the UIM, log on to MOS, click on the 'Patches & Updates'.  Under 'Product or Family', search on Product = 'StorageTek Unit Information Module' (UIM).

At the above link there are three different versions of the UIM; the version to use depends on the operating system version and maintenance level.

TYT10K0.usermod

This version of the usermod is for OS/390 V2.10 to z/OS V1.2.

TYT10K1.usermod

This version of the usermod is for z/OS V1.3 to z/OS V1.10 without IBM APAR OA24964 installed.

TYT10K2.usermod

This version of the usermod is for z/OS V1.8 and above with IBM APAR OA24964 installed.

Due to a change IBM made with APAR OA24964, the old UIM had to be rewritten.  The above-listed UIMs have been updated to support all the current Sun StorageTek tape drive types:  9490, T9840x, T9940x, T10000x.  These new UIMs were released in March 2009.

A UIM allows a non-standard or non-IBM device to be defined so that in a MVS drive display (D U,,,ddd), instead of showing as 3590 or 3490, the drive could show as 9840 or some other unique unittype.
