Goal

On lw8 class platforms (v1280, n1280 and E2900) the lw8 and sgfru drivers can emit strange warning messages.

Solution

Messages such as:

lw8: [ID 590583 kern.warning] WARNING: lw8:lw8_open: inst 0 drv_priv failed

or:

sgfru: [ID 590583 kern.warning] WARNING: sgfru:sgfru_open: inst 0 drv_priv failed

appear in /var/adm/messages, or on the system console.

These error messages are the result of an "unprivileged" user (i.e., not root) running a command which attempts to open /dev/lom or the sgfru devices.

An example of such a command is "lom -v":

% date
Mon Dec 20 14:02:43 EST 2004
% lom -v
Open of /dev/lom failed with error: Not owner
% tail -1 /var/adm/messages
Dec 20 14:02:44 v1280-hw lw8: [ID 590583 kern.warning] WARNING: lw8:lw8_open: inst 0 drv_priv failed

These messages are informational only, and do not indicate a problem of any kind.

The question then becomes "what user ran this command?". Determining this is beyond the scope of this document.
