Goal

Service Mode is expected to be used only under the direct supervision of an Oracle Authorized Service Provider (an Oracle Solution Center Engineer or Oracle badged Field Engineer).
Service Mode is used only for specific service related procedures, such as:

  • Resetting a component's CHS status (See <Document: 1004879.1>)
  • Resetting the LOM password on a Sun Fire[TM] v1280, E2900 or Netra[TM] 1280, 1290 (See <Document: 1005086.1>)

It is preferred that Service Mode procedures be performed by an Oracle Solution Center Engineer utilizing Oracle Shared Shell.

  • By using Oracle Shared Shell, the customer will be able to watch the procedure you perform while it happens but will not have access to Service Mode.

Solution

Steps to Follow
Follow this procedure in order to obtain a Service Mode password.
The following System Controller information is required prior to obtaining a Service Mode password:
  • System Controller HostID
  • ScApp Version
  • RTOS Version
The above information can be obtained from the system controller keying in "service" followed by RETURN twice at the SC platform shell.  Example output as follows:
sc0:SC> service
The use of service commands can be destructive and destabilize the
system. Use of service mode is authorized only by personnel trained
in its use.

Enter Password:
Invalid password.

HostID: 8302436a
ScApp version: 5.18.0
RTOS version: 41

Note that showsc -v output to obtain information can be imprecise, as some systems (eg: V1280, E2900) will return different values for hostid than you are expecting.

The showsc command shows the DOMAIN hostid, not the SC's hostid.

Use ONLY the procedure above using the 'service' command.

NOTE:

If the system is running ScApp 5.20.15 or higher

the CHS status can be reset from the SC or lom prompt by anyone who can login to the Main SC and no special access is required at all.

Generate the Service Password.

A Service Mode password can be obtained from the following internal Sun website:  https://modepass.us.oracle.com
(a backup server is also available from https://modepass-bak.us.oracle.com)

ATTENTION:

  • Service Mode access should, whenever possible, not be provided to a customer

  • Do not dispatch a case to the field to perform a Service Mode procedure when you can utilize Sun Shared Shell instead.

When Oracle Shared Shell is not an option, a customer can be directly supervised as they perform the suggested procedure.

  • This is not a preferred option by any means and it is your responsibility to ensure that Service Mode's use is appropriately controlled.

  • If proceeding with this option, you should "walk the customer" through the exact commands and steps which are being entered as they are needed.

  • Do not simply provide an emailed list of commands for their later use (this would be "unsupervised" use).

  • When a procedure is completed, have the customer exit Service Mode and remind them that they should not re-enter Service Mode again.
