Description
This is a list of those systems which have replaceable Flash PROMs and
those which do not, and those for which it is necessary to remove the
cover to change jumper settings.

Steps to Follow
The following systems do NOT have replaceable Flash PROMs.
In case of the need to upgrade the OpenBoot PROM (OBP), it will be necessary
to replace the IDPROM:
Pre-SPARCstation[R], all SPARC Classics, SPARCserver[R], SPARCcenter[R],
and SPARCstations including:
SPARCstation 1
SPARCstation 2
SPARCstation 4
SPARCstation 5
SPARCstation 10
SPARCstation 20
For the following systems, the OBPs are Flash PROM upgradeable, but in
some cases it is necessary to remove the system covers and change the
jumper pins to write protected status. The table below outlines which
system has the jumper pins set to write enable by default and the ID
of the jumpers in question. In most cases the jumpers must be moved to 2+3
to set them to write enable.
To further check that the OBP can be upgraded it is also necessary
on systems (such as the E250/450) with lockable power switches
to ensure that the power key switch is NOT in the locked position. If the
power switch is left in the locked position the Flash PROM will be write
protected irrespective of write protect jumper settings.
NOTE that a plug-in card may be installed in the system which covers
the jumpers. This must be removed to access the jumpers and later
replaced.

* WP = Write Protect, WE = Write Enable
It is essential that you use appropriate Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
protective measures when carrying out work on the system hardware. This
includes the use of wrist straps, conductive pads and earthing leads.
Failure to follow appropriate ESD precautions may cause irreparable damage
to your hardware. This damage may be immediately evident or may cause your
hardware to fail some time after carrying out the work. Contact Sun for
advice before carrying out work on your hardware.
It is imperative to refer to the README of the patch when upgrading
the OBP. The example below concerns the excerpt for how to prepare
the system to upgrade the OBP for the Ultra 1. The README also
contains further essential details for upgrading the OBP.
As root, exit the OS such that the system returns to the PROM''s "ok"
prompt:
# halt
ok
a) Power off the system.
** CAUTION ** Do not attempt to access any part of the system hardware
with the system power still on!
b) Remove the system top cover. (If you are unsure how to do this then
consult your system "Installation Guide" or "Service Manual".)
c) Set J2003 to write enable at 2+3. Default is write protect at 1+2
Locate jumper J2003. NOTE that a plug-in card may be installed in
the system which covers J2003 - if this is the case then you will
have to remove the plug-in card in order to access J2003.
Jumper J2003 provides a write enable/disable mechanism for the
Flash PROM. J2003 normally connects pins 1+2, which causes the
Flash PROM to be write protected. To enable patch installation,
write enable the Flash PROM by MOVING the J2003 jumper from pins 1+2
to pins 2+3.
**IMPORTANT NOTE**: If this jumper is NOT set to WRITE ENABLE, the
Flash update will fail.
(If you have difficulty locating J2003 then consult Figure 1-2 in the
"Sun Flash PROM Guide for Workstations and Workgroup Servers -
Standalone Version").
If a plug-in card was removed to access J2003 in the step above
then reinstall the card now.
d) Replace the system top cover.
It must be stated that the above is true for the mentioned systems only and
that newer systems may not follow the same criteria.
