FixDescription The function of Hitachi Volume Shredder is to prevent important data from being leaked when disks are removed from the array, and taken off-site. A license key is necessary to use Hitachi Volume Shredder.
Hitachi Volume Shredder provides this level of security by performing multiple write operations on the magnetic disk media, in random orpre-determined patterns, to completely remove data. When Hitachi Volume Shredder has been activated by installing a valid license key on the SVP, it functions by default, any time an LDEV is formatted. To access HVS functions: 1. Access either Web Console or Storage Navigator in Modify mode, for the array to be configured. 2. Click on the "LUN Expansion/Virtual LVI" button, located on the left-hand toolbar. Then select the VLL Tab. 3. Click on the "Shredding Param." button. 4. Define the type of data to be written(hex), the write pattern, and number of writes. Note: the default is three writes - 00, FF, then 00 - which meets the DoD specification. 5. Click "OK" to exit the configuration screen. Volume Shredding generates a compressed .tgz file containing binary files with the results from the operation. To view the contents of the bin files, use a hex editor. If the contents are all zero's, shredding was successful. If not, this indicates the operation ended with an error. Note that you cannot perform volume shredding on external volumes.
