 Description
This article contains basic troubleshooting data for Microsoft Windows operating systems for storage related issues

A growing number of Sun StorEdge products have been certified, qualified and supported for Microsoft Windows operating systems.
This article will enable you to obtain basic troubleshooting data for Microsoft Windows operating systems for storage related issues.

For more generic issues you should reference troubleshooting doc. <Document: 1010936.1>  Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems: How to obtain troubleshooting information:

The following Microsoft Windows operating systems will be covered:

  • Microsoft Windows NT
  • Microsoft Windows 2000
  • Microsoft Windows 2003
  • Microsoft Windows XP
  • Microsoft Windows Vista (in future)

Steps to Follow
Data Collection Steps

Basic Microsoft Windows Data Collection

For most storage and storage software related issues, the basic data to collect are:

  • The Registry(as a text file)
  • The Application, Security, and System Event logs(as text files)
  • System Information

  • vxdisk list
  • vxdisk diskinfo

If Veritas DMP has been licenced, additional commands follow:

  • vxdmpadm arryinfo
  • vxdmpadm deviceinfo
  • vxdmpadm pathinfo

Host Bus Adapter - Fibre Channel

For a Windows platform, it should be possible to collect the data via screenshots,
from either SANblade Manager for QLogic HBA, or lputilnt for Emulex HBA.

QLogic

For further information go to http://support.qlogic.com

We will use the CLI feature and redirect to an output file for the following commands:

References to understand Microsoft Storage Technologies

With most recent releases of Microsoft Windows 2003 and Microsoft Windows XP, two major changes had been introduced - Microsoft Multipath I/O (MPIO) and Storport Driver Model.

Microsoft Multipath I/O (MPIO)

The Microsoft Multipath I/O (MPIO) driver development kit allows storage vendors to build interoperable multipath solutions that integrate tightly with the Microsoft Windows family of products. If the configuration meets the prerequisites this will be a built-in feature for Microsoft Windows operating systems.

Storport Driver Model

Storport is a new storage driver model created by Microsoft for Windows Server 2003 and future Windows operating systems. Storport offers a higher performance architecture and better Fibre Channel compatibility in Windows systems. Try out following URLs as references.
