Goal

What is required for Sun Management Center (SunMC) and System Management Service (SMS) to work together on the Sun Fire[TM] 12K/15K/E25K/E20K (SF12K/SF15K/E25K/E20K) platform.

Solution

Using Sun Management Center in conjunction with System Management Service on a System Controller for a SF12K/SF15K/E25K/E20K can lead to issues that resemble new bugs if either software package is not up to date. Luckily, this can be solved with simple patch management.

In order for SunMC to communicate correctly with SMS, both packages must be up-to-date. If the latest patches for SMS are installed but the latest SunMC patches are not, there may be a communication problem between the two packages. SunMC may be looking for a specific message and/or specific file format, while the patches that were just installed changed them so that SunMC does not recognize the new files.

The easiest way to resolve and avoid these kinds of issues is to update the patches for SunMC on the SCs, SMS, and SunMC on the domains at the same time. This will ensure that both packages are up-to-date and should be able to communicate with each other.

Below are some examples of what has been observed at customer sites due to conflicting patches:
  • esd daemon dieing with no messages logged on SCs and domains
  • Platform monitoring daemon dies after the first 15 minutes of starting
  • Alerts not being seen on the SunMC server
Possible errors are not limited to those listed above. Any customers with issues regarding SunMC and SMS should first update patches for both of these products to verify that the two are communicating together as designed.
