Goal

Procedure to setup Solaris[TM] Operating System console when connected to Sun Fire[TM] V20z / Sun Fire[TM] V40z SP via network connection.

Solution

NOTE; Assuming there is monitor / keyboard / mouse connected to the serve:

1. Power cycle the machine and press <F2> to enter the BIOS setup utility at the appropriate prompt

2. Browse to "Advanced" tab, and select "Console redirection"

3. Set the following value:

Com Port Address: On-board COM A Console connection: Direct Baud Rate: 9600 Flow Control: NONE Console Type: ANSI

"Save the BIOS settings by pressing <F10>. The machine will now reboot"

4. Login to SP of v20z / v40z

# ssh -l # platform set console -s sp -S 9600 -e # platform get console ~ to check the setting # platform console ~ get connect to console

5. Once the O/S has rebooted, login as root and set the following:

"For Solaris 10 3/05 and below:"

# eeprom output-device=ttya # eeprom input-device=ttya # init 6

"For Solaris 10 1/06 and above (GRUBboot loader):"

# eeprom console=ttya # init 6

6. Detach the monitor / keyboard / mouse and you should now be able to use the platform console after issuing the following command at the service processor prompt:

# platform console

 NOTE; How to handle "console" session once connected:

^e c .         -> to terminate console session
^e c f         -> force take over of console session
^e c ?         -> help
^e c w         -> show other connecting sessions
