Goal

DAT-72/SDLT - st.conf Entries Required to Use 4mm DAT-72 (DDS5) on Trusted Solaris

Solution

Description
Because of the differences between standard Solaris[TM] and Trusted Solaris[TM] patch distribution, some drivers are not updated immediately on both platforms. Some customers running Trusted Solaris[TM] 8 or 9 with a StorEDGE[TM] 4mm DAT-72 tape drive will require manual entries in st.conf to support the drive.

Steps to Follow
The following entries can be added to the standard st.conf file running on the Trusted Solaris host to enable support for the drive:

(For SCSI inquiry identification)
"HP C7438A", "HP DAT-72", "HP_DAT_72";
This field (with SIX spaces between HP and C7438A) associates the SCSI inquiry string with HP_DAT_72, which we use to reference in the 2nd 'half' of the st.conf

(For st driver settings)
HP_DAT_72 = 1, 0x34, 0, 0x18619, 4, 0x47, 0x47, 0x47, 0x47, 0;
The settings here enable support for variable block length, SPACE block fwd, SPACE block rev, recognition of end-of-data, allows the driver to be unloaded, support for blocks > 64KB, and mode select compression. The DAT-72 drive only supports one density.

A full st.conf file is also attached to this problem resolution which includes all necessary entries. A system administrator can add the entries manually, or use the attached file to allow the tape drive to work.
