Purpose
Explain requirements for newly supported 16 GB and 32 GB DIMMs in T4 rackmount servers and Blades
Scope
Persons who install and replace 16 GB and 32 GB DIMMs in T4 rackmount servers and Blades
Details
As of 10/9/2012 there will be new architecture 16 and 32 Gbyte DIMMs that require System Firmware
8.2.1.b or later.
There are four DIMM capacities supported: 4 Gbyte, 8 Gbyte, 16 Gbyte, and 32 Gbyte.
The introduction of these DIMMs requires consideration of the fact there are now two different architecture 16 Gbyte DIMMs(see matrix below).
They have different part numbers and are not interchangeable.
All Dimms in a system must be the same capacity(example 16 Gbyte), but may be of different architecture(2rx4 versus 4rx4) within the guidelines listed by system type below.
For 16 Gbyte DIMM configurations, all DIMMs associated with each CMP(Processor) must be identical (identical capacity and identical architecture).
For full DIMM configuration rules please the the individual product's Service Manual
T4-1 and T4-1B
Since there is only one processor CMP0, all 16 Gbyte DIMMs must the same capacity and architecture. No
mixing of 16 Gbyte DIMMs allowed.
T4-2
The system has two processors CMP0 and CMP1. Each CMP has two memory risers cards associated with
it. Each memory riser card MR0 and MR1 has 8 Dimms slots, for a total of 16 DIMM slots associated
with each CMP. When using 16 Gbyte DIMMs, the 16 total DIMM slots on the two memory risers associated
with each CMP must the same capacity and architecture. No mixing of 16 Gbyte DIMMs within a CMP.
T4-4
The system will have one or two Processor Modules PM0 and PM1 depending on the configuration.
Each PM will have two processors CMP0 and CMP1, each with 16 associated DIMM slots. All DIMM slots
associated with each CMP using 16 Gbyte DIMMS must be of the capacity and architecture. No mixing
of 16 Gbyte DIMMs within a CMP.
An unsupported DIMM configuration could result in system power down as well as a diagnosis of MSG ID SPT-8000-PX displayed by ILOM "show faulty" command, or by use of the ILOM Fault Management Shell's "fmadm faulty" command.
The console output for an illegal configuration that would result in a power down looks as follows:
[CPU 1:0:0] ERROR: Not all DIMMs have the same SDRAM capacity.
[CPU 0:0:0] ERROR: Please refer to the service documentation for supported memory configurations.
[CPU 1:0:0] ERROR: Not all DIMMs have the same number of ranks.
[CPU 0:0:0] ERROR: Not all DIMMs have the same SDRAM capacity.
[CPU 1:0:0] ERROR: MCU0: Invalid DIMM configuration.
[CPU 0:0:0] ERROR: Not all DIMMs have the same number of ranks.
[CPU 1:0:0] ERROR: MCU0: DIMMS across the same channel must have the same rank capacity.
[CPU 0:0:0] ERROR: MCU0: Invalid DIMM configuration.
[CPU 1:0:0] ERROR: /SYS/MB/CMP1/MR0/BOB0/CH0/D0: Not configured
