How to Identify what type of Sun Blade 6000, Netra 6000, or Sun Blade 6048 chassis for compatibility of components and firmware.

The Sun Blade 6000, Netra 6000, and Sun Blade 6048 chassis are complicated platforms especially because different types of chassis types have no external markings or product name changes to help identify which type you have.  This document is written to help an engineer identify what type of chassis they have and what firmware can be used on that chassis.  Once you know what type of chassis you have this helps to identify what components can be used in that chassis for compatibility from blades, NEMs, PSUs, CMMs, midplanes, and firmware.

I think the first thing we need to cover is terminology as this is the first thing that confuses engineers.  Lets give the chassis names so that you understand what these different names mean:

A90-A - This chassis was the first version released and has a PCI Express 1.1 capable midplane.  This applies to both Sun Blade 6000 and 6048 chassis types.

A90-B - This chassis was the next release of chassis and has a PCI Express 2.0 capable midplane.  This applies to both Sun Blade 6000 and 6048 chassis types.

A90-D - This is the latest M2 release of the chassis and also has a PCI Express 2.0 capable midplane.

N6000-AC - This is the first version released and has a PCI Express 2.0 capable midplane.  This is a NEBS compliant AC voltage chassis.  This chassis only supports NEBS compliant components and blades.

N6000-DC - Like the AC this is the first version released and has a PCI Express 2.0 capable midplane.    This is a NEBS compliant DC voltage chassis.  This chassis only supports NEBS compliant components and blades.

7100418 AC M2 - This is the latest M2 version released and has a PCI Express 2.0 capable midplane.  This is a NEBS compliant AC voltage chassis.  This chassis only supports NEBS compliant components and blades.

7100417 DC M2 - This is the latest M2 version released and has a PCI Express 2.0 capable midplane.  This is a NEBS compliant DC voltage chassis.  This chassis only supports NEBS compliant components and blades.

Sun Blade 6048 B22-A - This chassis was the first version released and has a PCI Express 1.1 capable midplane.

Sun Blade 6048 B22-B - This chassis was the next release of chassis and has a PCI Express 2.0 capable midplane.

After reading the above you still may be confused as the descriptions of the different chassis types are all very similar.  So how do you identify what kind of chassis you have.  This is done in a combination of ways mainly by identifying certain components in the chassis.  Specific components are only used in the different vintage and types of chassis which allow you to identify which chassis type you have.  You must have a CMM snapshot to identify which kind of chassis you have.  Once you have the snapshot review the ipmitool fru output which will have a listing of all the components installed in the chassis as well as the product name.  Once you have this use the table below to help you identify the different type of chassis:

Identify Chassis Models:

Chassis Model
Midplane part numberCMM board part number
CMM product part number
Notes
A90-A 541-1983 501-7379 371-1447 The A90-A chassis have PCIe 1.1 midplanes. Some server modules and NEMs can't be used with PCIe 1.1 midplane.
 A90-B 541-3789 501-7379 371-1447 The A90-B chassis have PCIe 2.x
midplanes. Some server modules and NEMs
require a PCIe 2.x midplane.
A90-D 541-4239 511-1531 541-4340 or 7019286 The A90-D M2 chassis have PCIe 2.x midplanes. Some server modules and NEMs require a PCIe 2.x midplane.  The CMM product part number must be used to distinguish between different types of
A90-D CMMs. Use this part number to determine support for Sun Blade 6000 Virtualized 40 GbE Network Express Module.
N6000-AC 541-4289 501-7379 371-1447 or 501-7516  Equivalent to A90-B chassis.  This chassis only supports NEBS compliant components and blades.
N6000-DC 541-4393 501-7379 371-1447 or 501-7516  Equivalent to A90-B chassis.  This chassis only supports NEBS compliant components and blades.
7100418 AC M2 541-4711 511-1531 7026736 or 7014261  Equivalent to A90-D M2 chassis.  This chassis only supports NEBS compliant components and blades.
7100417 DC M2 541-4712 511-1531 7026736 or 7014261  Equivalent to A90-D M2 chassis.  This chassis only supports NEBS compliant components and blades.
SB6048 B22-A 541-2445 501-7789 540-7545  Equivalent to A90-D M2 chassis.  This chassis only supports NEBS compliant components and blades.
SB6048 B22-B 541-4236 or  541-3542 501-7789 540-7545  Equivalent to A90-D M2 chassis.  This chassis only supports NEBS compliant components and blades.

Once you have identified which vintage of chassis you have this will identify which firmware (ILOM) to use for that chassis.  See the chart below which breaks out what version types to use with what chassis types:

 A90-A 1.x, 2.x, 3.x SB6000 SW1.x, SW2.x, SW3.x Not compatible with 4.x firmware releases.
 A90-B 1.x, 2.x, 3.x SB6000 SW1.x, SW2.x, SW3.x Not compatible with 4.x firmware releases.
A90-D 4.x SB6000 SW4.x 1.x, 2.x, and 3.x versions of ILOM cannot be used on these chassis as they are not compatible.
 N6000-AC 3.x N6000-AC SW1.0  Not compatible with 4.x firmware releases.
 N6000-DC 3.x N6000-DC SW1.0  Not compatible with 4.x firmware releases.
7100418 AC M2 4.x N6000 - 7100418 SW1.0  3.x versions of ILOM cannot be used on these chassis as they are not compatible.
7100417 DC M2 4.x N6000 - 7100417 SW1.0  3.x versions of ILOM cannot be used on these chassis as they are not compatible.
 SB6048 A90-A 1.x, 2.x, 3.x SB6048 SW1.x, SW2.x, SW3.x
 SB6048 A90-B 1.x, 2.x, 3.x SB6048 SW1.x, SW2.x, SW3.x

With each chassis type there are specific blade types that are supported.  See the below chart to determine which blades are supported in which chassis.

NOTE: Also be aware that just because a blade is supported in a specific chassis type does not mean that all blades supported in that chassis can be used with all blade types in the same chassis.  See specific blade product documentation to see what other blades are compatible in a chassis with any other given blade type.  Documentation also need to be consulted to determine chassis and blade firmware compatibility.  These will be defined by the blade type used.  The below chart simply shows what blades are compatible with what chassis types only.

The last item we will cover in this document is which Network Express Modules (NEMs) are supported in which chassis type.  See the below chart which shows which NEMs are supported.

NOTE: Please note that just because a NEM is supported in a chassis does not mean that all blades supported in that chassis are supported with the specific NEM.  The individual NEM Product documentation must be referenced for specific blade supportability with any NEM and firmware levels needed to support that NEM.  The below chart simply shows what NEMs are supported in which chassis types.
