Purpose

This document is to assist with installing the NEW Sun Ray[TM] Operating Software 11.x. 

Scope

 This document apply's to anyone who administers an Oracle Sun Ray[TM] environment.

Details

This procedure explains how to update the Sun Ray[TM] Clients with the NEW Sun Ray[TM] Operating Software 11.0 or 11.0.1 firmware.  

Note: The Sun Ray Operating Software 11.0 or 11.0.x must be installed on a Sun Ray server running Sun Ray Software 5.3 or 5.3.x. Installing Sun Ray Operating Software 11.x on an earlier version of Sun Ray Software will NOT be supported.

The error messageError: Unknown firmware module type (magic number="3badbeef") may be displayed if you try to install the firmware on a previous Sun Ray Software release.

Procedure for Installing Sun Ray[TM] Operating Software

Download the latest Sun Ray[TM] Operating Software 11.0 or 11.0.1 from My Oracle Support (MOS)

  • 11.0.1      Patch ID: 14218449        Download Name: p14218449_110_Generic.zip    Firmware: 11.0.1.0_05_2012.0.5.29.21.30
  • 11.0         Patch ID: 13928709        Download Name: p13928709_110_Generic.zip    Firmware: 11.0_49_2012.03.27.10.35

To do so, using the Standard Search within MOS:

   1. From a web browser, go to the My Oracle Support site and login. https://support.oracle.com
   2. Click on the Patches and Updates tab.
   3. In the Patch Name or Number field, enter the appropriate Patch ID.
   4. Click Search.
   5. Click the Patch Name then Download to a designated directory.

To do so, using the Advanced Search within MOS:

   1. From a web browser, go to the My Oracle Support site and log in.  http://support.oracle.com
   2. Click on the Patches and Updates tab.
   3. In the Patch Search section, click Product or Family (Advanced Search).
   4. In the 'Product is' field, enter 'Sun Ray Software' and choose the matching name in the dropdown menu.
   5. In the 'Release is' field, choose the appropriate release for the maintenance update to download.
   6. Click Search.
   7. Click on the Patch Name then Download to a designated directory.


Update the Sun Ray[TM] Clients with firmware installed with Sun Ray[TM] Operating Software

1. Unzip the downloaded Sun Ray[TM] Operating Software zip file from section I. This will create sr0s_11.x directory.
2. Change to sr0s_11.x directory then run 'utfwinstall'. This will create /opt/SUNWutdfw/lib/firmware directory.
3. Populate /tftpboot directory so Sun Ray[TM] Clients can have access to new firmware.

# /opt/SUNWut/sbin/utfwadm -A -a -V -f /opt/SUNWutdfw/lib/firmware

4. Enable GUI firmware downloads (if applicable)

# /opt/SUNWut/sbin/utfwadm -Aa -N all -G force

5. Power cycle each Sun Ray[TM] Client to upgrade with new 11.x firmware.
6. Check each Sun Ray[TM] Client for the new firmware.   To do so, press 'stop v' on keyboard or run the following command:

# /opt/SUNWut/sbin/utfwload -Ha
