Purpose
The purpose of this reference document is the provide the rules for DIMM configuration
Scope
The document will be useful for anyone who will either configure, or check the configuration, of DIMMS in the T5120/T5220/T5140/T5240/T5440 Servers
Details
(Note: Mixing different voltage dimms in the system is NOT supported across all cmt platform)
T5120/T5220
-----
1. Has a minimum of 4 DIMMs at 1GB = 4GB
2. Has a maximum of 16 DIMMs at 8GB = 128GB
3. Mixing of DIMM sizes is NOT supported
4. Uses 1.8v DIMMs
5. Does NOT support 1.5v DIMMs
T5140
-----
1. Has a minimum of 8 DIMMs at 1GB = 8GB
2. Has a maximum of 16 DIMMs at 8GB = 128GB
3. Mixing of DIMM sizes is supported but not within the same memory CPU. CPU 0 has 8
DIMMs on the motherboard and CPU 1 has 8 DIMMs on the motherboard. Therefore two sets
of 8 DIMMs can be supported e.g. 8 x 2GB, 8 x 4GB.
4. Uses 1.8v DIMMs in older server versions and 1.5v DIMMs in newer versions (see table
below)
5. Does NOT support mixing of 1.5v and 1.8v DIMMs
6. ATO bases SETA....1Z can operate with all 1.5v or all 1.8v DIMMs depending on which
power supply is installed. DC power supply units will not support 8GB DIMMs.
7. It is possible to convert an older T5140 using 1.8v DIMMs to use 1.5v DIMMs. This involves
replacement of all existing DIMMs, replacement of power supplies and upgrade of system
firmware to 7.1.6.d or later.
8. 8GB DIMMs are currently only available in 1.5V; T5140 does not support 8GB 1.8V DIMMs.
Samsung is the Only qual'd 8GB DDR2-667/PC2-5300 1.5V DIMM (part number 511-1228)
T5240
-----
1. Has a minimum of 8 DIMMs at 1GB = 8GB
2. Has a maximum of 16 DIMMs at 8GB = 128GB when not using a memory mezzanine
3. A memory mezzanine card (SEUX2MM1Z or SEUX2MM2Z) can be added to give 16 more
DIMM slots and a maximum of 32 DIMM slots. In this case, the maximum memory capacity is
32 DIMMs at 8GB = 256GB. The SEUX2MM1Z part number will only support 1.8V DIMMs,
while the SEUX2MM2Z(511-1231 and 540-7792) part number will support both 1.8V and 1.5V DIMMs.
5. Uses 1.8v DIMMs in older server versions and 1.5v DIMMs in newer versions
6. Does NOT support mixing of 1.5v and 1.8v DIMMs
7. It is possible to convert an older T5240 using 1.8v DIMMs to use 1.5v DIMMs. This involves
replacement of all existing DIMMs and upgrade of system firmware to 7.1.6d or later.
8. 8GB DIMMs are currently only available in 1.5V; T5240 does not support 8GB 1.8V DIMMs.
Samsung is the Only qual'd 8GB DDR2-667/PC2-5300 1.5V DIMM (part number 511-1228)
T5240 Memory Mezzanine Considerations
1. A memory mezzanine card (SEUX2MM1Z or SEUX2MM2Z) can be added to give 16 more
DIMM slots and a maximum of 32 DIMM slots.
2. When a memory mezzanine is added, 8 DIMMs are associated with CPU 0 and 8 DIMMs are
associated with CPU 1.
3. The main consideration 4 above states that mixing of memory DIMM sizes is supported but
not within the same memory CPU. This means that memory DIMMs on the mezzanine must
match the DIMMs on the motherboard e.g. if the motherboard had 8 x 2GB DIMM for CPU 0
and 8 x 4GB DIMM for CPU 1, then the mezzanine must have the same layout. This would
mean a total of 16 x 2GB DIMM for CPU 0 and 16 x 4GB DIMM for CPU 1.
4. When adding a memory mezzanine to a system that has 16 identical DIMMs on the
motherboard, it would be possible to achieve a mixed DIMM size configuration by moving 8
DIMMs from the motherboard to the mezzanine.
T5440
-----
1. Has a minimum of 4 DIMMs at 2GB = 8GB
2. Has a maximum of 64 DIMMs at 8GB = 512GB
3. There are four DIMMs on each processor board with an optional per processor memory
expansion board with 12 DIMMs. There can be four processor boards and four memory
expansion boards giving a total of 64 DIMMs.
4. Banks consist of four FB-DIMMs and must be populated completely, never partially
5. All FB-DIMMs on an individual processor and associated memory expansion module must be of the same capacity, either 2 GB, 4 GB or 8 GB per FB-DIMM. Example is: processor/memory expansion 1 can use all 2GB DIMMs,processor/memory expansion 2 can use all 4GB DIMMs
6. Bank 0 must always be populated, Memory bank 1 must be populated before banks 2 and 3, Memory banks 2 and 3 must be populated simultaneously and completely
7. If a minimum firmware version of 7.1.7d and Solaris patch 138888-01 are used, then the
amount of memory on each processor/memory expansion pair can be different.
8. Uses 1.8v DIMMs
9. Does NOT support 1.5v DIMMs
10. For systems with 1.6GHz processors, a 4GB 800MHz DIMM option is available. These
cannot be mixed with 2GB, 4GB or 8GB standard DIMMs running at 667MHz that are used in the systems with 1.2GHz and 1.4GHz processors. The 800MHz DIMM is NOT to be used in the systems with 1.2GHz and 1.4GHz processors. See the SSH for part numbers
