Description

An issue with Adaptive Replacement Cache (ARC) tuning may cause ZFS Storage Appliance Software to hang due to excessive memory fragmentation if those systems are configured with shares using multiple block sizes.

Occurrence

This issue can occur in the following releases:

  • ZFS Storage Appliance Software 2010.Q3.1.0 and 2011.1.1.0

on the following Sun ZFS 7000 Storage Appliance platforms:

  • Sun ZFS Storage 7420 Storage Appliance

Note 1: Sun ZFS Storage Appliance 7110/7210/7310/7410/7120 and 7320 are not affected by this issue.

Note 2
: This issue only occurs on systems with 512GB of memory or greater.

Note 3: To determine the current software release, do the following from the Browser User Interface (BUI):

  1. Navigate to: Maintenance -> System
  2. The current software release is shown in the 'Current Installation' section under 'Version'.

For example, the 2010.Q3.1.0 release would be shown as: 2010.08.17.1.0,1-1.14.

Note 4: This issue may occur if the Sun ZFS Storage Appliance (ZFSSA) is being configured using multiple shares, and those shares utilize more than one block size. This configuration in combination with a workload that causes the ZFSSA to switch from shares heavily utilizing one block size to shares heavily utilizing another block size can contribute to this issue. One such change in workload may be combining an external load that uses smaller block sizes (ie. 8k) with integrated features like Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) and replication that normally use large block sizes (ie. 128k).

Symptoms

Should the described issue occur, the affected system slowly becomes unresponsive and will eventually hang.

Workaround

This issue is addressed in the following release:

  • ZFS Storage Appliance Software 2011.1.3.0
